WRITTEN NARRATIVE OF THE WEATHER OF FEBRUARY 2000

February 2000 was the third very sunny February in a row and the winter of 1999/2000 has been sunnier than last winter and one of the sunniest in the last 100 years.

After the very stormy weather at the end of January the first few days were quieter and mild, or very mild on the 4th and the 5th with 57F recorded on the former, the highest temperature of the month, and 55F on the latter date. The weather was mainly cloudy in the first week, meaning night-time temperatures remained relatively high for the time of the year. However, the 7th brought sharp showers and severe gales that evening, early the following morning and during the early hours of the 9th.

The weather was fine for the next two days but as air pressure dropped, the wind changed to North-West. The weather became cooler and sleet fell on the morning of the 12th. The 13th was a fine sunny day but the next day was sunless with light drizzle. There was a trough of low pressure that brought snow and colder weather for the 16th. The snow mainly fell that morning and the temperature didn't rise above 38F that day, the coldest of the month. The 17th was bright and sunny in the morning but as cloud approached rain fell that evening. More heavy rain fell the following morning.

There was an anti-cyclone which took hold on the 19th, giving fine, dry weather by day but cold and frosty weather at night. Eight and 7.9 hours of sunshine were recorded for the 20th and 21st. The 22nd was also sunny.

The remainder of the month was mild under mainly southerly winds, particularly on the 23rd. A vigorous low brought heavy rain on the 27th but the 28th was fine and sunny and the 29th mild and dry.

The month was very mild. It was similar in temperature to February 1995 but nowhere near as mild as February 1998. There was no one day when the wind was from the East. Rainfall was above average but it was nowhere near as wet as some February's recorded in years gone by.
