WRITTEN NARRATIVE OF THE WEATHER OF AUGUST 2000

A depression drifted across the country during the opening days of the month, which were warm but showery. Drizzle fell on the morning of the 1st but that day itself was fine and warm. The 2nd started fine but clouded over later as did the 3rd.

Air pressure rose from the 4th and the 5th was a fine, warm and sunny day. The weather was warm and humid generally with sunny spells over the next few days but there was drizzle on the 9th before the weather brightened up later. The 11th was another fine, sunny day and the weather turned warm on the 12th and 13th but this didn't last long as a depression brought unsettled weather on the 14th with rain and whilst the morning of the 15th was fine and sunny, there were sharp showers after 2pm.

After the 16th high pressure brought fine weather and the sunniest day of the month was recorded on the 20th. However, the next day, the 21st, was very disturbed as a severe thunderstorm broke at 3.30pm and lasted for two hours. Hailstones fell, along with rain. In fact it was the wettest day of the month, coming directly after the sunniest.

Further developing high pressure brought another short fine spell, with three sunny days on the 23rd, 24th and 25th. The warmest day of the month was recorded on the latter date but the 26th was oppressive and a thunderstorm broke that night at 8.30pm. The 27th was cooler with sunshine and showers.

The next three days were dry, fair and quite warm but the month closed in cloudy weather. Rain fell on the evening of the 31st.

Daytime temperatures were almost 1C above average but were consistently warm rather than outstandingly hot. Night-time temperatures were around average. Sunshine was above average, which was welcome after the overcast July, and rainfall was below average, though again, the month wasn't outstandingly dry.
