WRITTEN NARRATIVE OF THE WEATHER OF APRIL 2001

Last month ended mild and settled and the 1st April was fairly warm, dry and sunny also. The 2nd started off the same but clouded over later. A fine but cooler day was recorded on the 3rd and a series of depressions brought heavy rain from the 4th to the 7th. The 4th and 6th were both very wet. The 8th started fine and sunny but clouded over that afternoon as the wind changed to the North-West.

The 9th to the 13th was the most settled period of the month but the weather remained overcast. Easter Saturday was dull but dry. Easter Sunday had sunny spells but the weather turned colder from Easter Monday onwards. The maximum on the 18th was 44F, the average for February, and hail fell at 4.30pm that day, as it did at 5pm the following day. The 21st was a fine, sunny day but the 22nd was dull and drizzly. The weather remained unsettled for the next few days but turned milder from the 25th. The final three days of the month were sunny.

The month was slightly colder than average, with both day and night-time temperatures being slightly below average in temperature. 60F was exceeded only twice, and that was at the start of the month. It was the fourth consecutive wetter than average April, though it wasn't as wet as April last year, whilst being an unsettled month. Sunshine was below average, but not exceptionally so.
