uOttawa Direct Connect Information Page

Overview

DC++ is a simple program that will allow ONLY uOttawa students living on RES and connected to the res-o-net servers to connect to each other and share files of all types. Because we are all on the same network file sharing speeds will be very high and download speeds will be over 1000kb/s or 1mb/s, faster then any other file sharing program availabe. Please do not share any files that have copyrights or are illegal, but no one can stop you from sharing whatever you want :) . Below are the steps you need to take to install the client and start sharing and downloading with your peers.

STEPS TO INSTALL

Step 1:

Download the DC++ Client which is available here. Click on one of the mirrors and the download will begin.

Step 2:

Install and run the DC++ client which will appear in your START menu. If you have a firewall that asks you if you want DC++ to access the internet check off "always allow" and allow the connection. I assume we can all do this.

Step 3:

The first time you run it this screen will appear:

Fill out the information it asks for, for the description but the resbuilding and floor you live on. For example if you live in 90 University then put "90 University 5th Floor". Make sure that "Active" is selected under the Connection Settings.

Step 4:

Next you need to add folders to share and increase your upload slots. If you do not share or have atleast 5 upload slots you will not be allowed to connect to the hub. To add folders to share first click on FILE then SETTINGS. Once the dialog has opened click on the "Sharing" tab on the left side. Then proceed to click on the "Add Folder" button, navigate to the folder you want to share, and it will be added. If you want to share more then 1 folder repeat this step. After they are added DC++ will index your files, this may take a few minutes to a few seconds depending on how many files you are sharing and how fast your computer is. Now you must increase your upload slots, this is done on the same dialog box. Feel free to put more then 5 slots, but 5 in the minimum required. This step is outlined in the image below. After this is done you will be ready to connect to the server and start your experience.

*NOTE* After you first download a file form the server DC++ will create a download folder in C:\Program Files\DC++\Download and this is where your downloads will be saved. After you have completed your first download, dont forget to add this folder to your "Sharing". THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT because it will create more people with the same file, and less waiting in line to download it :).

Step 5:

Now you are ready to connect to the uOttawa server. To do this simply click on FILE then QUICK CONNECT. In the dialog box type in: uottawa.encrypt3d.info:9999 , hit connect, and wait to be connected.

Step 6:

Now that you are connected, you will see the main chat window where you can chat with other people currently connected.

Step 7:

To start searching you can click on the Search button in the icon bar at the top of the screen, define your search, and go. Once files appear you can double click on them to start the download. The download progress is showen in the bottom of the screen

Step 8:

*Remember after your file file is done to add the "Download" folder to your sharing*

NOTE: SHARING WITH THIS PROGRAM DOES NOT EFFECT YOUR BANDWIDTH QUOTA. SO DOWNLOAD ALL YOU WANT IT WILL NOT GET YOU KICKED OFF THE NETWORK. SINCE IT IS ALL INTERNAL IT DOES NOT COUNT AS ACTUAL BANDWIDTH :)

Well thats it, your ready to go! Now tell your friends at uOttawa about this website and get them all connected to help the community grow.
