If he should have no son, then those documents will go to the first son of James E. Dean.

The genealogy of Elias Courtney and of Buefort Courtney, line of the Courtney line of family. They are as follows: Edward T. Courtney and of John A.Courtney and of a Joseph Courtney and Adolpus Courtney and Maryann Courtney and Martha Jane Courtney and their line of the Courtney families, and their descendants of the records of those family were assembled by the writer and the owner of those documents after more than 10 years of labor and a large amount of money as each persons record had to be checked and recheck to eliminate a possible mistake in those documents. A copy of those documents will be donated to the younger generation of these families of Elias and of the Buefort Courtney line of the Courtney family tree. There are lots of other Courtney families which I have omitted. They are William, Jessie and Rebecca and Burryann, James, and Sidney, and Sarah Courtney that I have omitted which belong to this family tree. Except Buefort Courtney, my grandfather, in whose line I am writing these record for their family and their family tree.

Elias Courtney was born in the City of Glasgow in the Country of Scotland* in the year of 1786.Great Grandfather Elias Courtney was a gunsmith by trade which he learned in the city of Glasgow. Great Grand Father Elias Courtney emigrated to Harrison County in the State of Kentucky in or about the year of 1800 where he met Mary Pavey and was united in marriage with her in the year of 1805. Mary Pavey was born in Harrison County in or near the village of Lexington in the State of Kentucky in the year of 1785. And she departed this life in Switzerland County in the State of Indiana in the year of 1865, age 80 years. And to this union were born seven children.

Those are the sons and daughters of Elias and Mary (Pavey) Courtney that are scattered throughout the United States of America and throughout the world. Great grandfather Elias Courtney was a soldier in the Indian Wars of northern County of Kentucky and the southern and the middle counties of the state of Indiana. By the way of Fort Recovery Ohio and on to Fort Wayne in the state of Indiana where they recaptured Fort Wayne and later Great Grandfather Elias was stationed there when this great city was just a fort. Later call Fort Wayne after General Wayne who was known as Mad Anthony Wayne. Great Grandfather Elias Courtney departed this life in Switzerland County in the state of Indiana in the year of 1861, age 75 years.
*(I have found Elias in U.S. Census where he consistently states he was born in Kentucky -- I've not looked for Elias in Scotland ALT 2005)

Edward Thurber was the father of Almira Thurber, the wife of Buefort Courtney and the grandfather of Almira and of Buefort Courtney's children. Great Grandfather Thurber was born in the City of Elmira in the State of New York in the year of 1778, January 9. Great Grandfather Edward Thurber was a soldier in the War of 1812 and 1813 and at the end of the war he emigrated with his family to Randolph County in the State of Indiana about the year of 1816. Great Grandfather Thurber entered government land about three miles northeast of the village of Old Deerfield in Randolph County in the State of Indiana in the year of 1816 on the north bank of the Missisinewa River where he cleared up his land and built his cabin. In time, he built a brick house, the first one in the county and where he lived during the remainder of his and Great Grandmother Hulda Thurber lives. Great Grandfather Thurber departed this life in Randolph County in the State of Indiana in the year of 1854, age 76 years. Great Grandmother Hulda Thurber past away in Randolph County in the year of 1848, age 70 years. Great Grandmother Hulda Thurber was born in the City of Elmira in the State of New York, in the year February 25, 1778.

Buefort Courtney son of Elias and Mary (Pavey) Courtney was born in Harrison County near Lexington in the State of Kentucky in the year of 1807 where he lived in his boyhood days. But when he arrived to young manhood he emigrated to Switzerland County in the State of Indiana about the year of 1830 where he met Almira Thurber, the daughter of Edward and Hulda Thurber of Randolph County in the State of Indiana and he was united in marriage with her in the year of 1832. And to this union were born 7 children: 
	William Courtney was born in the year of 1834
	Edward T. Courtney was born in the year September 5, 1836
	John A. Courtney was born in the year April 17, 1839
	A.Joseph Courtney was born in the year December 23, 1841 
	Adolphus A. Courtney was born in the year 1844
	Maryann Courtney was born in the year November 22, 1849
	Martha Jane Courtney was born in theyear April 24, 1852
William Courtney pasted away in Switzerland County in the State of Indiana in the year 1836. Those are the Grand Childred of Eliias and Mary (Pavey) Courtney which are scatteered threwout The United States of America. Grand Father Buefort Courtney was a Shoe Maker by Trade.

Which he learned when he was in young manhood as an apprentice and learned his trade thoroughly as he was suppose to be one of the best workmen in his day in making of fine shoes and fine boots. Grandfather Buefort Courtney emigrated with his family to Randolph County in the State of Indiana in the year of 1856 where he brought out the shares of Grandmother Almira Thurber brothers and sisters shares of the estate of the Edward Thurber farm of 165 acres of land. Where he still worked at the shoe trade while the boys run the farm for many years or during the remainder of his life. Grandfather Buefort Courtney past away in Randolph County in the State of Indiana April 7, 1876, age 69 years. Grandmother Almira (Thurber) Courtney Past away in the City of Portland in Jay County in the State of Indiana in April 1901. Grandmother Almira (Thurber) Courtney was born in the City of Elmira* in the State of New York in the year of 1809.
*(The 1850 Census for Switerland County, Indiana shows  Elias age 64 and Bluford age 39 both from Kentucky, Mary age 62 from Maryland and Almira age 37 from Connecticut.)

Martha Jane Courtney, daughter of Buefort and Almira (Thurber) Courtney was born in Switzerland County in the State of Indiana April 24, 1852 and emigrated to Randolph County in the State of Indiana with her father and mother in the year of 1856 where she grew to young womanhood and met John N. Poorman and was united in marriage with him in the year of 1872 and to this union were born four children.

Joseph William Poorman was born April 20, 1881.

And was united in marriage with Peter Crevestion of near Union City in the State of Indiana in the year of 1898. To this union was born one son. Cecil Floid Crevestion was born October 4, 1899 and past away December 19, 1899.  Peter Crevestion past away in the City of Muncie in Delaware County in the State of Indiana November 19, 1917. Later Lucy (Poorman) Creveston was united in marriage with Stanley Miller of the City of Muncie in Delaware County in the State of Indiana July 3, 1918.  Lucy Courtney (Poorman) Miller is the granddaughter of Buefort and Almira (Thurber) Courtney and the great granddaughter of Elias and Mary (Pavey) Courtney. Stanley Miller was born May 20, 1880.

Della May Poorman, daughter of Martha Jane (Courtney) Poorman and John N. Poorman was born near Union City in Randolph County in the State of Indiana. May 24, 1878. And was united in marriage with William Lindsey near Union City in Randolph County in the State of Indiana in the year of 1896 and to this union was born one daughter.
Edna Mae Lindsey was born September 12, 1898 and departed this life in the year July 11, 1922. William Lindsey past away in the year of 1900 January. Later Della was united in marriage with William O. Hathaway of Randolph County in the State of Indiana, February 7, 1902 and to this union was born nine children.

Della Poorman and William Lindsey was married May 24, 1896. To this union one daughter Edna Mae Lindsey, born September 12, 1898. Died July 11, 1922.  Later Della (Poorman) Lindsey and William Hathaway was married February 7, 1902. (Looks like the date was altered and originally read May 7, 1902.) Granddaughter of Buefort Courtney. Della had 10 children, 11 grandchildren (23), 15 (difficult to read) people related by marriage. There are 11 families. There are 24 in all. There are 11 families in the Della and Martha Jane Courtney line of families to date March 15, 1935.

Orla Nathaniel  Hathaway, son of Della Poorman Hathaway was, born near Union City in the State of Indiana, Randolph County, November 7, 1902 and united in marriage with Bernice Mosley of the State of Virginia in the year of 1927 and to this union was born one daughter. Betty Mae Hathaway was born April 5, 1931 in Prince George, Virginia. Nathaniel Orla Hathaway is the grandson of Martha Jane (Courtney) Poorman and John N. Poorman and the great grandson of Buefort and Almira (Thurber) Courtney and the great great grandson of Elias and Mary (Pavey) Courtney. Orla Hathaway lives at Liberty in the state of North Carolina.

The Descendants of the Courtney Families

Elias Courtney was born in the City of Glasgow in the Country of Scotland in the year of 1786. He immigrated to the United States of America and to the State of Kentucky in the year of 1800 ; where he met Mary Pavey and was united in marriage with her about the year of 1805. This is the first generation.
Buefort was born to Elias and Mary Pavey Courtney in the year of 1807. Buefort Courtney married Almira Thurber in the year of 1832. This makes the second generation.
Edward T. Courtney was born to Buefort and Almira Thurber Courtney September 5, 1836 Edward married Mary Elizabeth Key in the year of December 4, 1861 This is the third generation.
There was born to Edward and Mary E. (Key) Courtney a daughter, Sarah Almira Courtney, in the year May 7, 1868 Sarah married William Shaneyfelt in the year of 1890. This is the fourth generation.
To William and Sarah A. (Courtney) Shaneyfelt were born a daughter, Hazel Shaneyfelt, born in the year March 5, 1896. Hazel married Opher Tompson in the year of 1917. This is the fifth generation.
There were born to Opher Tompson and Hazel (Shaneyfelt) Tompson a daughter, Melba, born in the year of 1917. Melba married Johnny Drown in the year 1935. This makes six generations.
To Melba and Johnny Drown were born a son in the year 1936, May 5, named Larry Thomas Drown. He makes the seventh generation.

Courtney is on this same web site.  There is a link between every other page in this text that will take you to those images.  In this edited version there are some notable changes.  First (Maiden Names) are in brackets if accomanpied by a married name.  I have removed the listing of family names, such as Alfred L. Hathaway Poorman Courtney Taylor, Jr. to just Alfred L. Taylor, Jr. my real name.  I think this will make for less confussion.  I have left in place Charle's repeating of the linage with each person.  I have added some information to this edition, Charles N. Courtney seems to have stopped working on this history about 1943, so any information that appears to account for event after that time are most likely the work of my grand mother Della Mae (Poorman) Hathaway, my mother Majorie Beatrice (Hathaway) Taylor and myself  Al Taylor with help from my cousin Susan (Giglio) Gramelt. I have also corrected or at least tried to make consistent use of some names.  Charles refers to Della Mae (Poorman) Hathaway's oldest son as Nathaniel Orla Hathaway other sources refer to him as Orla Nathaniel Hathaway and I have changed this text to that form.
