Domestic Ferret

Domestic Ferret 01

Dometic ferrets are cute fuzzy domestic animals that are very popular in America. They rank third in popularity, after dogs and cats. They are not vicious animals that go around maiming for no reason. That job is reserved for humans. They will only attack if poorly trained or treated.

Domestic ferrets are said to be desceneded from european polecats. The domestic ferret's scientific name is therefore similiar: Mustela putorius furo. Their quarry is generally a dry kibble food with high animal protein and fat content. Some domestic ferrets will eat small animals, so be careful with other pets such as rats and mice. In England, they are used to flush out wild rabbits and such, and for pest control. The practice of flushing out animals with ferrets is called ferreting, an illegal activity in America. Due to their domestic nature, most won't last long outside in the wild, despite what some (usually ferret hating) authorities say.

They are intelligent and curious, so you will have to supervise them whilst they are roaming free. Many will explore anything and everything. They are social creatures, so a playmate or two wouldn't hurt. Well, except maybe your wallet and toes. They require as much free time as you can give. When unsupervised, a big cage should be their home. Multi-storey ideally. Water, food and litter box should be provided, both inside and outside of their cage. Sturdy toys that make sounds will be of interest to them. Squeaky toys may produce interesting effects. They will make toys out of anything they choose; though they can be quite picky sometimes. They may be more interested in the packaging rather than the item inside! Some domestic ferrets have been known to obssess a little over some items, so be careful what they handle. They like objects with texture, like rubber, so watch out for anything that's been chewed upon, and take appropriate measures.
