Twenty-First Century

September 11, 2001. America is struck with devastation when a total of four planes are hi-jacked. Two planes are crashed into the World Trade Center towers, one was crashed into the pentagon, and the other was crashed in Pennsylvania. This event caused America to be more cautious than ever.

Since February 2001 more than 1500 cases of Foot-and-Mouth disease have been documented in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Argentina, and Brazil. This outbreak has caused concern around the world for farmers involved in animal agriculture. Foot-and-Mouth disease is highly contagious and affects all cloven-hoofed animals including cattle, swine, sheep, deer, elk, and other wildlife.

Micael Jordan says good-bye in 2003 for the third time. He left the Bulls to join the MLB and angering several loyal fans. He discovered that baseball ain't his game and he left the professional sports world forever. Then, forever ended and he came back to the NBA to play for the Wizards. He's realized that he is too old to continue on. His physical ability is failing him. This 6'7" man is (once again) retiring. He led a fulfilling career and many people believe that the eagle as finally landed, for good, this time.

Bush v. Gore;Republicans take control of both Executive and Legislative branches. Albert Gore was a sore loser and the Supreme Court ended up with another case to resolve. The petition presented: whether the Florida Supreme Court established new standards for resolving Presidential action contests (thus violating Article II of the U.S. Constitution) and whether the use of standards manuel records violates the Equal Protection and Due Process clauses.

Angels Win 2002 World Series. The Anaheim Angels began the 2002 season with the worst record in team history. They came back and proved that they're not the worst. The World Series hosted the Anaheim Angels and the San Francisco Giants. There was amazing rivalry between Northern and Southern California. However, the Angels pulled through and won their first championship. The owner expressed her husband's wish to see his team win one World Series, but he sadly passed away several years ago.

It is kind of surprising that it took Coca-Cola this long to develop and market Coke with "vanilla flavor." Maybe the recipe was too complicated. Maybe the failed transition to "New" Coke more than a decade ago frightened Coke execs away from messing with its classic formula. Or maybe those execs feared a violent backlash from lovers of A&W Cream Soda. Vanilla Coke is a refreshing change from the bitter taste of regular coke. Many people who don't like Coke-Cola do like Vanilla Coke.

The beloved Mr. Rogers dies on Feb. 27, 2003 at the age of 74. Fred Rogers died at hid home after a battle with stomach cancer. Rogers is best known for his children's program "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood." It appeared on the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. in 1963 and was picked up by PBS in America in 1968. The final episode was in 2001. Rogers was born in Latrobe, Penn. and he died at his home in Pittsburgh, Penn. He will be forever loved and forever missed by millions around the world.

Columbia tragically explodes. All Seven Dead. The space shuttle Columbia broke apart over Texas in March of 2003. They were sixteen minutes from landing at Kennedy Space Center, returning from a four month mission. There were six American astronauts and the first Israeli in space; all seven are dead. They were traveling at 12,500 mph. Communication was lost 203,000 ft. above the Earth at 9 am EST. Investigations show that nothing could have saved the crew. It's believed that damaged tiles and a slit in the left wing let enormous amounts of heat into the shuttle and caused it to explode. Pieces are still being found all over the Mid-West.

Her Majesty the Queen's Golden Jubilee. 2002 marks the 50th anniversary of the Queen's Accession to the Throne. She took the Throne on Feb. 6, 1952, which also marks the date of her father's death. Thus the reason for celebrating on the Accession date. The Golden Jubilee is a time to look back and the Queen wants to thank everyone for the support they have given during her reign. The celebrations involved everyone of all ages, ethnicity, and station.

Michael Jackson "faces" the truth about his surgeries. Here is Michael at the age of 42 with his wrecked face and apparently no makeup. Gone the artistry of the airbrush, wizardry of make up artists and the kind, magic lighting of studio crafted reality. You can see the rumored (please note inventive use of word "rumored" to avoid a law suit...) fake-nose-tip-prothesis hanging off as well as the scars. The thin little beak nose of 1997 seems to have expanded once again. It's hard to see a human being in there, and it's amazing there are plastic surgeons who can mutilate someone like this and sleep at night.
