Sources and Transport of Marine Pollution

Sources of Pollution

Oil tanker spills and outflow pipes are the main sources of PAH’s for the marine environment.

Land runoff is a big source of organochlorines, heavy metals and some PAH’s.  These substances

generally come from the run-off of agricultural and industrial land.

Destructive fishing practices are the main source of cyanide in the marine environment.  The cyanide

comes from cyanide fishing which is practised in most Indoneasian countries.  There is also a problem

with heavy metal pollution because of the lead based anti-fouling paint used on the hull's of the boats.

Transport of Marine Pollutants

Pollutants are generally transported into the marine environment through sediments.

The particles of the pollutant adsorb to the sediment particles.

They can be transported great distances in small amounts of time.

Estimates suggest that fine particles move 0.4 km per day, coarse particles at 0.4 km per day (Abelson et al, 1999).
