Case Study 2 – Mercury Levels on the Caribbean Coast

The investigation was carried out on the coast of Panama and Costa Rica.

23 sites were sampled for sediment and coral skeletons.

The samples were then evaluated for total mercury levels (Guzman & Garcia, 2002).

Mercury levels on Caribbean Coast – Results

The investigation found very high mercury levels in the entire region.

It found a sediment average of 71.3 ppb and a coral skeleton average of 18.9 ppb.

Panamanian corals were the worst corals with levels of up to 21.4 ppb.

Costa Rican sediments were the worst sediments with levels up to 85.9 ppb (Guzman & Garcia, 2002).
