Job Description

If you've ever moved from one house to another, you know how much hard work it is. You may also recall that it always takes a lot longer than you think. While some people enlist their friends to help them move, others hire movers to do the work for them. It’s likely they'll do it a lot faster, too.

Movers will move just about anything (e.g. furniture, office supplies, equipment, pianos), and they'll move it from homes, offices, apartments or stores to just about anywhere.

When someone has to move to another town, professional movers usually start by taking an inventory of all items to be moved. If anything is lost, scratched or broken during the move, the owner will know because they are given a copy of this inventory.

When moving day arrives, movers drive a truck to the person's house so everything can be moved into it. It’s important to make sure everything will fit in the truck. Once all the items in the house are boxed, movers usually load the truck with the largest items first. These large items become the first layer in the truck. Smaller and more fragile items can be safely stacked on top.

Large items are taken apart when possible. Movers use dollies to carry heavy items, such as refrigerators and ovens. A ramp is used to roll these items on board. Some trucks have hydraulic lifts attached to the back.

Movers carry the lighter boxes by hand. Usually one person will work in the back of the truck to organize everything inside, while the other movers carry the boxes and hand them over once they reach the truck. When everything is in the truck, any items that may slide around while the truck is moving are tied down with ropes or straps. This prevents items from crashing into each other, causing damage. The movers may also wrap fragile items in padded blankets to prevent them from getting scratched or broken.

One mover drives the truck to the new location. Once there, all items are removed from the truck and brought into the new house. Usually the owner of the house tells the movers which room each box belongs in. Any large items that were taken apart by the movers are reassembled for the client.

Some movers may also be responsible for billing the client for their services, and receive any money or cheques for payment. They issue the client a receipt once the bill is paid. Otherwise payment is arranged by the moving company’s office.
