The construction of the tower occurred in the last quarter of the 12-th century and was probably arranged by count Albrecht III of castle Habs. The family seat of the Habsburgs, the castle Habs, lies only few kilometers away and the town resulted after a little while served for a while as a residence of the habsburgischen counts. 1238 the black tower was mentioned for the first time in a document.

Because one had used for the construction partly also poor pieces which come from the ruins of the nearby legion camp Vindonissa, one accepted long, the tower is of Roman origin and called him, therefore, falsely also "Roman tower". Only in the 19-th century one recognized that the material had reused and the tower had been built therefore at least 800 years later than accepted.
