The “Reallysafe” palette

In some cases, the “Websafe” palette may not be safe enough. Color monitors with 15-bit, 16-bit, and 24-bit color depths can be unpredictable in the way they adapt color palettes, as explained by David Lehn and Hadley Stern, developers of the Reallysafe palette.

Reallysafe contains only those colors that rendered accurately on a variety of “High Color” monitors occupying the space between 8-bit (256 colors) and 32-bit (millions of colors). Only 22 colors passed the test, and most of them are shades of green.

Should you confine yourself to the Reallysafe palette? Not really. Its main value is that it makes us more aware of the unpredictable behavior of colors on the Web. The real solution is to test your work on as many browsers and platforms as you can.
