A Response To ?Fish Cheeks?: "Fish Cheeks" The Whole Story In Amy Tan's autobiographical story entitled "Fish Cheeks," Amy Tan is damaged by the fact that she is different from the world around her. The problems are caused by the mind set of the time. Immigrants weren't treated back than with the standards we bestow upon immigrants today. The prejudices which cause many discomforts in the self-esteem. Amy is mad with her mother for creating a menu that is very usually from the American's Christmas Eve dinner. A slimy rock cod with bulging fish eyes that pleaded not to be thrown into the pan of hot oil. A usually American expect ones that like seafood would eat stuff appulling food after having a humbuger or pizza, which has no bones, brains or eyes in it. Then my father poked poked his chopsticks just below the fish eye and plucked out the soft meat. "Amy , your favorite," offer me the tender fish cheek. Amy not taking the tender fish cheek means that she rejects her cultural and her being Chinese. She has being re-born into American vaules, but has repect for her mother and the food she once loved. Amy's unset with her famliys table manners which causes emberusig moemns for her and the gest. My relative licked the ends of their chopsticks and reached across the table, dipping them into dozen or so plates of food. The minister's famliy believes this is a unhealthy and will not eat the food touched by the ends of the chopsticks. At the end of the meal my father leaned back and belched loudly, thankind my mother for her fine cooking. Belching is not somthing good in the eyes of geust and is rude. There is no hope in changing the table manners, but there can be a change themind set of the gest. She wants nothing to do with all of the culture and customs of her people, which they made long ago. She handed me a early gift. It was a miniskirt in beige tweed. The miniskirt repestends the culture of americans and their way of life. "But inside you must always be chinese." She wants her dather to understand that she knows what she when threw and she can not change what she is.The lesson and the miniskirt has changed the point of veiw of her's for a life time. Amy Tan wrote a short story named ?Fish Cheeks ." The central purpose is that Amy is Chinese so she can never stop the way she is different you can never forget what you are cause are apart of it and you must respect your past.
