I was born in Memphis, Tennessee the home of Corky's Famous Barbeque.. although I was there before Corky's came to be. I went to school at St. Agnes Academy, a school that is lots older than me.. and you thought I was old!!! While I was a youngster, I enjoyed my summers going to summer camps. I went to a YWCA camp called Miramichee in Hardy, Arkansas and later to Camp Nagawicka in Delafield, Wisconsin run by St. John's Military Academy. Neither of these camps are in existence today. I went to College at the University of Alabama on the main campus and then moved to Birmingham when the School of Nursing moved to Birmingham. I was a graduate of the Charter Class of the School of Nursing. I have lived in Birmingham longer than I have lived anywhere else. It kinda grows on you like Kudzu! My church family since the 1970's has been Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church located in Homewood on Oxmoor Road. Our parish is noted for having the Chapel of Our Savior prayer chapel which is open 24/7 for prayer. The Church is very capably led by Father Martin Muller and we welcome Father Michael Deering as Associate Pastor this year. In residence at Our Lady of Sorrows are: Msgr. Brian Egan and Father Emmanuel Iheaka. There are a multitude of outreach ministries and many activities for participation. Back in the 1970's when I was in my first job in nursing, and working at the church teaching CCD on the weekends, I became acquainted with Father Patrick Cullen and the Apostolate for the Mentally Retarded in Birmingham and through him the L'Arche Communities founded by Jean Vanier. I was touched deeply by Jean Vanier and his writings and attended some Faith and Sharing retreats as well as a Faith and Light Pilgrimmage to Rome in 1975. While Faith and Sharing groups are still around in many areas, Birmingham no longer provides this opportunity for community gathering. To find out more about Jean Vanier, check out the links page. Attending a Faith and Sharing Retreat around 1972, I became acquainted with Patricia Wehner who at the time was a member of the Vincentian Sisters of Charity in Bedford, OH. Her community became very dear to me and I joined her up there for about five years. I could not find a web link for this community, but I will continue to look for one and post asap. In the early 1970's, I was an instructor in the Hospital School of Nursing at St. Vincent's Hospital. At that time the School of Nursing was under the most capable leadership of Mary Katherine King. The faculty were a family caring for the students we taught. This school later closed in the 1980's but St. Vincent's Hospital continues to provide excellent care for patients in most health care disciplines. I presently work in the Mission Services Department at St. Vincent's as a Mission Services Volunteer with Sister Virginia Delaney, DC. See the links page for more information regarding St. Vincent's! In the fall of 1991 Sister Virginia Delaney went to visit her sister in Mississippi. While she was there, she accompanied her sister to an orgnizational meeting for the Presentation of Magnificat, a Ministry to Catholic Women. She brought materials home with her and shared them with me and I shared them with my dear friend, Peter Ann Ryan to discern if perhaps we were being called to start a chapter of Magnificat in Alabama. In the spring of 1992, Peter Ann and I journeyed to New Orleans and were transported by car by the founder of Magnificat, Marilyn Quirk, to our first Magnificat meal in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Attending that meal was an answer to our prayers as we knew then, that our dream for the women of our diocese was right on target. IN addition to planning for the beginnings of Magnificat, 1992 found me also planning for a wedding... mine. My years of being a single person were fast coming to an end!!!Adjusting to married life after being single for so long was a challenge but when you are married to Mr. Right what can you say? In late 1992, along with my beloved and other very close friends, I found myself attending a Life in the Spirit Seminar which quickly introduced all of us to the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. We were then one step closer to fulfilling the dream of having a Magnificat chapter in our area. Years of waiting, prayer, discernment and planning resulted in the first Magnificat meal being held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Birmingham Feb 17, 1996 with Sister Briege McKenna as our speaker. 500 women attended that first event and 300 others could not be accommodated. For further information about Magnificat, please go to the links section and check the links out. That's all for now folks. Keep watching, things may be a changin. |
