Project:
BALARA HIGH SCHOOL
Third
time’s a charm.
Batch
2004 of the Interior Design Program of the University of the
Philippines, Diliman, continued the third installation of the Outreach
Program for ID 179, the Special Project class, in lieu of the usual
modular exhibit showcase in malls. It was first done in 2001 for the
Social Welfare Department in the form of the renovation of the
Reception and Study Center for Children and the Golden Acres. Next
came the redesigning of several spaces in East Avenue Medical Center
in 2002. This time, educational institutions are given special
attention. Obviously larger in scale, three schools in various points
of Quezon City will enjoy a better environment with the help of the Graduating
Batch. And one of these schools is Balara High School.

A design that is reflective of the ground on which it stands is the direction taken by the team tasked to rethink the way two significant rooms in Balara High School
are
to be utilized through the science and art of interior design.
The
entire heritage, the legacy of centuries, is a portrait of ourselves
as Filipino. In it we see ourselves and continue to discover
ourselves. From awareness of Rodrigo D. Perez III in Lugar |
It's bound to happen. The 20th of October signaled the end of ID 179, with the Final Turnover Rites in the three schools that have been provided with design and construction services by the Graduating Batch of UP Interior Design. Second in the itinerary for the day was Balara High School, with Prof. Lorena Buencamino spearheading the ribbon-cutting ceremony, along with a representative from the school. We can’t have it any other way. Yes, there were times when you’re tempted to give up and there were times you can’t handle it any longer. But this is construction, this is reality. We already know things that we can only learn of in the actual world of design and construction. We may have gone modular but it would just be run-of-the-mill exhibits where we can really be creative and always call the shots but in the long run it was more fulfilling to know that you’ve helped a lot of people. And this is the real essence of being an Iskolar ng Bayan |
Balara
High School was founded in 1974. Being a government-funded public high
school, it lacks the necessary equipment and is very much in need of
improvements that shall serve the students better and help them learn
and study in a more conducive environment. Design problems range from
dilapidated furniture, noise, odor, lack of space (even stair landings
are used as classrooms), poor layout of classrooms, and many
others.

DESIGN CONCEPT: Ang pag-iisang dibdib ng kultural at kontemporaryo Finding that which links heritage to progress is the stress of every design decision made, as accompanied by the concern of designing rooms for the impressionable youth. These students must be reminded of how beautiful our culture is and we must emphasize the splendor of identity, which they deem as the “price of progress.” The graciousness of our collective memories are reflected in the classic, cultural Manila of old but reformatted with a modern twist, as a deliberate divergence from tradition using innovative forms of expressions. This is a translation of what is from the past to what is now, what is contemporary |

The Library Reorientation of the room was called into order, thus a wall was torn down so the corridor would be taken in for a larger space. Shelving was replaced with a more interesting and more height-appropriate set. The tables were replaced and benches were provided for maximum seating. The colors used were laidback for a more airy ambience but it was lively enough so as not to induce sleep. A librarian's counter was introduced, which takes on an asymmetrical form for that modern twist, and another was the tutorial area for one-on-one lectures. |

Technology & Livelihood Education Rm 1 This room needed a lot of work. Furniture was just made by the students, thus not only are they insufficient and ergonomically-challenging, they are hazardous as well. The partition was breaking down and the ceiling looked so unstable. The partition falls on the windows thus they were repaired to fall on the concrete wall. Furniture pieces were made stronger and user-friendly. Storage was also provided, the ceiling was fixed and in keeping with our "aliwalas" mindset, color was used to make the place feel lighter (i.e. the borders of the blackboard was painted white). The door was patterned after a capiz window but was randomly arranged, in keeping with our concept. |

Technology & Livelihood Education Rm 2 The treatment done in Room 1 was the same for Room 2, but here we added a "map mural" that was inspired from one of the maps in Paulo Alcazaren's book Lugar. So as to evoke an old "feel" for the room we wanted the effect of an old, crumpled map that had coffee stains. Only, the putty of the partition wall kept on showing so we had to change the color into a darker one. Luckily, it worked, we just added some scratches, and uneven applications. Storage was also provided, and furniture was made sturdier. Like in Room 1, the flooring was coated with gray paint, lighting fixtures were provided so that there would be ample lighting, and even the exterior was painted so that the overall look of the place is redone. |
