AWF Report 6/14/03
Results of Ozark show June 14 Mayhem in Ozark: A big step forward for AWF By Jay Felsberg Correspondent Ah well, let’s all catch our breath… The American Wrestling Federation put on its best show to date on Saturday, June 14 at the Ozark Civic Center. Over 600 fans (including about 400 who never saw AWF wrestling before June 14) were on hand for a tremendous card. The card led off with the much-anticipated “flag versus flag” match between hated Canadian heel Aeon Flexx and popular Jason Hero. The match was made after Flexx’s vicious assault on a fallen Hero the week before in Chipley. The fans did not enjoy the preamble to the match. As the National Anthem wound down, Flexx stormed the ring, demanding that the playing our nation’s beloved anthem be halted so “Oh Canada” could be played. Flexx ordered the playing of the Canadian anthem, but it could barely be heard above booing from the crowd. Hero came to the ring accompanied by Amber the American Beauty, and the battle began. The rules of the match were simple: You had to cover your opponent with your nation’s win a pinfall. Flexx was in command for much of the match, using a number of illegal moves and chokes to gain the advantage over Hero. Several times, it looked like the popular Hero would go down to defeat by the hated Flexx, but each time Hero beat the count. The fans were clearly behind Hero, and drawing from their support and that of his lovely valet, the Real American Hero came back to nail the Heroplex for the pinfall and the win. Flexx, however, could not leave well enough alone. The Canadian villain is one of the most renowned “backstabbers” in the AWF, and he lived up to his reputation as he blasted Hero from behind as The Real American Hero, Amber and the fans were celebrating. Flexx took the American flag and went so far as to use it to wipe the sweat off of his body as he stormed backstage. A lady fan (dressed in red, white and blue) tried to save the US flag, but Flexx yanked it from her hands and contemptuously tossed it to the ground. Knowing Jason Hero, I doubt that we have heard the last of this encounter! The next match featured Street Bandit versus none other than the Luscious One himself, Luscious Larry. Returning from a training injury suffered several weeks ago, the Luscious One came to the ring accompanied by manager Dandy Jack and Luscious Doll Melissa. The Bandit gave Larry all he could handle and took charge for much of the match, however, Larry used his notable ring savvy to turn the tables and nail the Luscious Slam for the win. The most interesting part of the match, however, was what involved Melissa. The lovely valet paid more attention during the match to Street Bandit rather than Larry. This raised the ire of both the Luscious One and his manager, to say the least. After the match, Larry sneeringly “gave” Melissa to Street Bandit, telling the masked man that he was “disposing of the trash”. Later that night, a grateful Street Bandit said that even though he was pinned by Larry, “I won”. A three-way between “The Weasels” was next up, and the Lost Avenger, Kid USA and Daredevil put on a high-flying show for the Ozark audience. The match included plenty of action, including their patented triple suplex off the top turnbuckle. The match ended after Kid USA speared Daredevil, but Lost Avenger nailed the Kid with the Stop sign and covered Daredevil for the pin. After the match, Dandy Jack came to the ring and announced that he would take Lost Avenger under his wing, dismissing the other two Weasels as mere “children”. Jack has considerable heat with the Weasels, and Daredevil and Kid USA responded by “panting” Jack and revealing a rather colorful pair of red and yellow undies. The maniacal and increasingly unpredictable Curtis Leroy again rescued Jack by double choke slamming the two Weasels. Next up was the final of the AWF Junior Heavyweight Tournament between two of the most popular wrestlers in the AWF, Ronnie Fargo (accompanied by the lovely Valerie Velvet) and Ryan Fury. This proved to be an outstanding technical and scientific match with plenty of action from the top of the turnbuckles to the ring. Fargo finally hit the Fargoplex for the pinfall, and good sportsmanship reigned as both men praised the other for their great effort. “I couldn’t have lost to a better man”, Fury said. The bikini contest for Miss AWF was next, and the pageant was worth all of the anticipation. Contestants included Trysten (valet of Blake Richards), Valerie Velvet (valet of Ronnie Fargo), Amber the American Beauty (valet of Jason Hero), Sexy Samantha (valet of Mr. Fantasy), and Hell Kat, manager of Freakshows of Faith and valet of Curtis Leroy. There were many highlights during the contest, not the least of which were the beautiful ladies themselves. Dressed (sic) in daring bikinis and even thongs (Sexy Samantha), it appeared to be a difficult choice for the judges, representatives of the Radio People network out of Dothan. Unfortunately, one contestant, Sexy Samantha, was “eliminated” early by her jealous and possessive “boss”, Mr. Fantasy. Fantasy has been abusing poor Samantha for the last few weeks at AWF events, and he outdid himself last Saturday. The heel stormed the ring and made Samantha cover herself with burlap! Fantasy also screamed at the lovely Samantha that he did not “say you could do this”, and dragged his valet backstage by her hair. It was not a pretty sight. The show went on, but there was a strange turn of events. Freakshows of Faith, Dandy Jack and Curtis Leroy accompanied Hell Kat to the ring, and for some reason the Radio People began spouting the virtues of Hell Kat (who kept her wrap on for the entire contest – from a quick glimpse of what she “wore” underneath, this was for the best). In what the fans clearly regarded as a major upset, Hell Kat was crowned Miss AWF! Was intimidation a factor? A good question! The showdown between AWF Heavyweight Champion Czr and The Man, The Myth, The Legend, Blake Richards, was up next. Special referee was Rob Stark of 102.5 FM, who was trashed on the radio on his popular “drive-by” show on Friday afternoon by The Man, The Myth, The Legend. The match was nip and tuck throughout, but Czr took control and hit the Wishmaker for what looked to be the pinfall to retain his crown over the former champion. However, at the two count, Stark developed a “cramp” and could not complete the pinfall! As a furious Czr confronted Stark, Richards came up from behind with a viscous low blow and applied the Legend for the win. Apparently a new champion was crowned. After the match, Stark proudly announced that he discovered that he and Richards were related, and that he was helping “family”. The celebration was short lived, however, as Senior Referee Montell Mitchell ran to the ring. Mitchell announced that, as senior referee, he was reversing the decision and returning the belt to Czr! Richards did not take Mitchell’s decision in mature fashion. The next match was scheduled to be between Mercury McCloud and Curtis Leroy. However, when McCloud’s music played, there was no McCloud! Silence pervaded the civic center until Leroy’s manager, Dandy Jack, screamed at Mitchell that McCloud was “too dumb to appear”, and to start the count. At 10 McCloud was counted out, and the increasingly unpredictable Leroy was declared the winner. Street Bandit came up from behind after the match and slammed Leroy with a chair. Pain does not affect the maniacal Leroy, and he turned to powerbomb and powerslam Bandit, and then let Dandy Jack get the “pin”. “Three in row”, Jack boasted. “Who is next”? Jack is getting good at pinning people Leroy sets up for him. The next match was supposed to be AWF Tag-Team Champions, Chief Little Bear and Raine Quapone, defending their titles against the Dalton (accompanied by valet Renee). The big cowboys were on hand to abuse the fans and their opponents, but there was no Quapone. Little Bear told the Daltons that they would get a shot at the belts next week in Chipley if they beat him and a stand-in partner. The stand in turned out to be popular Ryan Fury, and the two gave battle to the Daltons in a brutal match. The Daltons fled the ring several times early in the match to “collect their thoughts”, and then proceeded to double-team Fury for much of the match. Fury was already exhausted from his earlier match with Ronnie Fargo, but he gave all he had as usual, and Little Bear eventually made the save. Action went four way quickly. Little Bear was decked and Fury was doubled up on for the pin by the Daltons. The big cowboys left the ring after more abuse on the fans, and Steve Dalton contemptuously told the crowd to “sign ‘em up”, as the Daltons boasted that they are “looking for action”. NOTE: The Daltons demand, “total silence” before and during their matches. “We are wrestling geniuses”, Jesse Dalton said Saturday night, “and we don’t need the bellerin’ and bitchin’ of a bunch of ignorant, dirt farming South Alabama rednecks to interrupt us while we think”. Fans are urged to respond to this demand. The main event was an incredible four-corners tag-team match with tables, ladders and chairs rules. All three items could be used, and as a team was pinned it was eliminated from the contest. Teams were Coalition-X (Jason Hero and Road Dogg Jesse James, accompanied by Amber), Freakshows of Faith (Sinn and Forsaken, accompanied by Hell Kat), the Assassin and Mr. Fantasy (accompanied by the Controversial Eddie G and Sexy Samantha), and Backdraft and Confederate Kid. This was no match - it was a war! Trying to put it any order is impossible, as action was constant every step of the way. The wrestlers battled in and out of the ring, with fans leaping to their feet to cheer or jeer the combatants. Highlights included: 1.Road Dogg and Mr. Fantasy trading face slams against the back wall.
Backdraft and Confederate Kid were first to go, followed by Mr. Fantasy and The Assassin. That left FOF versus Coalition-X, with the popular Coalition pulling out the win in what is so far the AWF Match of the Year! It has been many years since a wrestling card was held in Ozark, and the local fans were clearly excited to see what the “hardcore” AWF see in Chipley and Hartford. A number were asking (heck, begging) AWF to come back as soon as possible. Plans are in the works for a return visit in several weeks. The veteran Luscious Larry said it best after the match. “We have the finest wresting in the Southeast”, Larry said. “Nobody puts on a better show than the American Wrestling Federation”. Next match will be Saturday, June 21 at 8 p.m. in the Roulhac Community Center in Chipley. AWF will be in Hartford at the Johnny Hughes Community Center at 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 28. We hope to see you on hand. |
