AWF Report 4/19/03
Reported By Jay Felsberg on 4/19/03. A tag-team matchup featuring four of the biggest stars in the American Wrestling Federation highlighted action on April 19 in Roulhac Gym in Chipley, Fla. Damian continued his comments from the April 5 show by snatching the mike from announcer Dirty Bird Jimmy Tarrentino and dissing his opponent, Raine Quapone, as the Dirty Bird tried to introduce the card for the evening. Commissioner Karen McDaniel challenged “Pure Evil” to show her something to impress her. The Assassin (who was announced as “from anywhere but Chipley, Fla.”) met Dirty Larry Brock to settle their grudge from earlier in the month. The Assassin apparently didn’t trust his wrestling skills to deal with the popular veteran, as he smashed a baking pan over Dirty Larry’s head to split him wide open. Dirty Larry returned the favor and the two traded blows before knocking each other out for a double count-out. We haven’t seen the last of this feud. Newcomer Mercury McCloud made a big impression on fans as he faced Ghostfaced Killa (with manager Dandy Jack). GFK had to take several breaks outside of the ring to be comforted by his manager, who was having problems of his own as the crowd chanted the “Captain Kangaroo” chant over and over again. Dandy Jack was forced to make several saves to keep GFK from being pinned, but in the end a crucifix turned into a powerslam put McCloud in command. Interference ended the match as GFK was disqualified to give McCloud the win. After the match Hell Kat told McCloud, “you’re not quite where you need to be”. Hell Kat suggested that McCloud would do much better with her help, but McCloud responded that, “if you lay with dogs you wake up with fleas”, and declined Hell Kat’s offer to join her stable. This led to an attack on McCloud from behind by Curtis LeRoy, with a save by Ceazar. (NOTE: It is a shame to see such a fine manager like Dandy Jack being insulted over and over and over again by fans with the “Captain Kangaroo” - “Captain Kangaroo” -“Captain Kangaroo” chant. It seemed that at times the gym was filled with “Captain Kangaroo” - “Captain Kangaroo” -“Captain Kangaroo” chants. Several fans even brought homemade posters with “Captain Kangaroo” insults. Fans are reminded that these posters made Dandy Jack madder than ever and left him in fits of incredible rage. Please keep in mind that the sight of DOZENS of such posters at future matches could lead to serious spasms of rage by Dandy Jack.) A triple-threat match featured Brian Fury, Street Bandit and newcomer, Cowboy Jesse Dalton. As you might expect, “alliances” were fast and loose throughout the match. The other two contestants ganged up on Street Bandit for most of the match, with Brian Fury superplexing SB for the pin. This came after Street Bandit’s valet, Renee, slapped him twice. Cowboy Jesse cleared the ring after the match and left with Renee. Damian got a chance to show his stuff to Commissioner Karen McDaniel when he faced Raine Quapone. Unfortunately for “Pure Evil”, thing s did not work out the way he planned. Quapone, the big, bad man from Detroit followed through with his threat to “not get screwed again” and put the Rainedrop on Damian for the pinfall. Not only was McDaniel not impressed with Damian, but neither was announcer Jimmy Tarrentino. After the match Damian and Tarrentino confronted each other in the ring, leading to the Dirty Bird coldcocking Pure Evil. Confederate Kid and Backdraft were scheduled to meet next for the patriotic firefighter’s Junior Heavyweight strap. Before the match, however, none other than Luscious Larry, The Luscious Girls and Dandy Jack came to the ring. The Luscious One is out for about six weeks following a broken leg suffered in a training accident the week before the card. Larry announced that he was there to scout the opposition (Larry has past heat with both wrestlers). “I will be here to take your match apart piece by piece, and my luscious eyes will be on you”, Larry said. Another great technical match followed between two of the best wrestlers in the AWF. However, the contest ended when Larry delivered a chairshot to Backdraft as he was caught in the ropes and the Kid got the pinfall and the title. That was clearly NOT how the popular Confederate Kid wanted to win, and he did not hesitate to show his excellent sportsmanship. Both men shook hands in the ring as Backdraft congratulated the new champ, and the Kid told the crowd and Commissioner McDaniel that Backdraft has a rematch on May 3 at Roulhac Gymnasium. Ceazar got his wish to have a no-disqualification match with Curtis LeRoy, and the wild contest ended with the man from Las Vegas getting the win (in part thanks to Mercury McCloud coming out to control Hell Kat and keep her from interfering to help LeRoy). As Ceazar and the crowd celebrated his win, however, out came none other than The Man, The Myth, The Legend, AWF Champion Blake Richards and his valet, Tristen. Ceazar clearly does not care much for the cocky attitude of MML, and the feelings are mutual on the part of the champion. Words followed, with Ceazar calling on Blake to put his strap on the line. Richards showed off his “guns” (his so-called “24-inch pythons, so marked by a label), and said that Ceazar would eventually get a shot. “Until then, make yourself useful and get me pizza, Little Ceazar”. “All the punks in the back are made famous because of me”, MML noted modestly. The tag-team belt was on the line next as Chief Little Bear and Ronnie Fargo (with valet Valerie Velvet) challenged Freakshows of Faith, Sinn and Forsaken. Fargo (a member of the famous Fargo wrestling family) was impressive with superkicks and other moves, but was trapped in the ring by the champions for a long period of time, and Little Bear was forced to make several saves until his partner could finally tag out. Little Bear evened the score, and when Sinn missed a Swanton Bomb it looked like the challengers might pull out a win. The action was all over the ring, and even around the ring, including a nasty catfight between Hell Kat and Valerie. The resourceful Sinn won the day for the champions as he superkicked Fargo through a chair and got the pinfall. Action continued after the match. Valerie was trapped in the corner by Freakshows of Faith before Raine Quapone hit the ring and cleaned house. This led to a challenge by Little Bear that he will put his treasured headdress on the line in a future match. In the main event Jason Hero and former WWE Sueprstar Road Dogg took on Blake Richards and Canadian star Aeon Flex. This was as good a match as could be asked for, as Road Dogg and Hero have major heat with their opponents, and all four wrestlers are among the best technical wrestlers around. Hero and Road Dogg would have no doubt been happy to win with skill, but Flex and MML used every dirty trick in the book to try and take the win. However, the popular Hero and Road Dogg know a thing or two about dirty tricks as well, and the Dogg put the Doggie Style slam on Richards to take the win, to the delight of the large crowd. Next card will be May 3, 8 p.m., Roulhac Gym in Chipley. |
