Goldeneye is the greatest thing to hit mulitplayer since Quake. Plain and simple. The game just can't be matched. This game has literally catapulted Rare into stardom (if you ignore the Donkey Kong series, heh.) Along with a imitated, but never duplicated mulitplayer mode, it has a great single player mode. Of course, it gets no respect, because it's on the N64 (long story.)
The graphics of this game were the greatest on a console (now they are very outdated, figures.) The game had just a hint of slowdown, with minimal clipping. The limitations of the system did show, however. Just shoot a guard in the foot, let him chase you, go behind a door, and close it, then see the "MAgIcAl ArM" come out and try and shoot you. The faces are well planted, they don't look like creatures from the black lagoon. The clothes fit, I was surprised to see a developer who cared what the Russian grunt wore. And, the gun's were superb. All of them in, and they all looked good (I'll go into greater detail later.)
The sound was so-so. It wasn't great, but it was okay. The bad part: music. A horribly butchered version of the bond theme (okay it wasn't that bad, but it was pretty freakin' bad.) And a couple of so-so tracks didn't make you get involved, luckily, the gameplay did. The sound effects were awesome, baby, yeah! Silenced guns sounded realistic (not like I would know how they sounded like *hides body* Heh, you didn't see that...), and bodies hitting the ground does too (heh, same as above). I just wish that Nintendo put in a sound chip, that way we could have true bond-ness...
Controls are one of the aspects that make this game revolutionary. This game has so many different types of controls, it'll make your head spin. Any style you want, except Turok style. There is even a way you can play with two controllers, for a semi-cooperative mode (much bickering will come over who gets to shoot). And the controls go off without a hitch, it is easy to aim, move, change guns, crouch, run, and strafe. Something yet to happen on a console game. This game has such great controls, you should stop reading this review and get a copy (like you don't already have it.)
Replay value is another revolutionary part of this game. This game has so many multiplayer options, you are going to be playing for months, even years! So many modes, where do we start?
License to kill- One shot and you're dead, you got the skillz (or running ability) to survive?
Normal- Normal run around and blow the bejesus out of your partner fun!
Team- Play with friends, against friends, Rare even included a feature for 3v1 (something I have to use)
Capture the flag- A person gets a flag, with all the other players trying to kill you, whoever has the flag longest wins. Here's the catch, the guy with the flag can't shoot with guns, only the flag.
Man with the Golden Gun- If you haven't seen the movie, please do. Anyway, you go looking around for the Golden Gun, which kills in one shot, but shoots slow.
Well, not to mention, you can adjust the weapons sets, the handicap (more life taken away for hits.) And the like, did I mention you can choose (aided with a code) over 50 characters, which will add a lot to the replay value.
Here is the Big Lebowski, the gameplay. This game has the best gameplay I have ever seen in a console game. There is so much to talk about, I can't, the game has too much stuff, you have to buy it now! Go and buy it now! I did promise I would talk about the guns, though. Well, the game has a ton, around 20-30. With a couple of letters changed to protect the innocent gun makers :). They all have different fire powers, ranges, etc. And I couldn't possibly cover them all, otherwise, I would be permanently hooked on caffeine. So, take my word for it, they are awesome. When you get a hold of the Sniper Rifle, you will never forget Goldeneye, or the guns in it.
