There was no listing under 'acid milk' per say, and the info
listed suggested that it was a complication from mastitis;
the bad bacteria causing the milk gland infection is ingested by
the pups causing them to sicken and die. There is something else
in "The Whelping and Rearing of Puppies" by Muriel P. Lee
(excellent book!) called 'toxic milk': "Toxic milk is a condition
that is attributed to incompatibility of puppies to bitches milk.
Watch for a litter that is not gaining weight and be particularly
concerned if the pupies start to persistently cry and sound colicky.
Quite often their rectums will become red and swollen and their
stools runny. Take your bitch and the puppies to the veterinarian
and have them checked over. Failure to take care of this problem
can lead to the death of the complete litter. If the mother does
have toxic milk, the puppies wiull have to be raised by hand."
Hernias
Hernias involving the abdomen may be congenital or acquired.
Umbilical hernias are likely to have a genetic component, although
all kinds of things during the birthing process can result in an umbilical hernia.
"The owner should be advised that the weakness may be heritable."
CORN
IT IS POSSIBLE THAT RAT TERRIERS ARE ALERGIC TO CORN BASED DOG FOOD. IT IS NOTICED AS
A SKIN PROBLEM. IF YOU NOTICE THIS TRY CHANGING TO A NONE CORN DOG FOOD. IF IT CONTINUES TAKE
THE DOG TO THE VET. BUT DON'T WAIT TOO LONG.
