August 1999 - '82 Custom Cruiser Wagon

When the 1999 derby season rolled around, we were all very ready to get back into the swing of things. The first car of 1999 was this rusted out 1982 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser Wagon. We didn't know how bad it really was until the carpet came out, and the floor boards came with it. Setting that fact aside, we built the car as best we could for the shape of the car, and gave it another expert paint job, and it was off to the race.(we also entered a mini in the same race but there's a seperate page for that) When we got there we went through the usual inspection and last minute preps after they inspected the car, and it was off to the Races for Peter who was again the driver.(Greg drove the Chevette). Things went great for us in our heat, no major damage on the front end, but work to be done on the back to get ready for the feature as Peter placed 3rd in the heat. While the mini's were going and Greg was going Berserk, Peter left me to get his car ready for the feature so he could go watch Greg at his first shot at a Derby. I got it all done and Peter went into the feature, only to be taken out early by a guy in a huge Chev who decided to park on the engine of the wagon, which pretty much cleaned off the the engine (i.e. breather, distributor cap, alternator, master cylinder actually landed in peter's lap). But this would not be the end of this Rusty Demon. We got it all fixed up and Ready to go to a derby at stirling the next weekend. We got all the parts the Day before the race, and while Peter and Greg worked on the motor, i set to work at tucking the roof down in the rear end since the was no longer a tailgate. This Process involved ME, A SLEDGEHAMMER, AND SIX HOURS OF DAMN HARD WORK. But it was ready to go and luck was against us once again. First heat second race, Peter was driving good, and another guy did an arena shot to the drivers door of the wagon. Took the roof post in a good foot and a half, and took the door panel off and lots of other damage. While Peter visited the ambulance workers, me and Greg got the car ready for the hard luck, where a small engine fire occured and ended the night for us. And ended the life for the wagon. It went 4 heats, and still would have been good for another race, but we didn't want to deal with it anymore.

Before - Nice Colour eh
