Chapter 12

The Wake-Up Call

A.J. set the portable phone down on his night stand and rolled out of bed. "I can't believe that just happened," he said.

"Me neither," said Patricia, still lying in bed. "Ugh."

"From now on I'm screening my calls."

"No, I shouldn't have answered the phone. Look, I'm just gonna go home now. This is too awkward." Patricia got out of bed and started getting dressed.

"No, no, no. You don't have to go. Stay."

"No, really. This is too…I cant even describe…"

"C’mon, it's not that bad."

"Not that bad?! Don't get me started! Our most special moment was shared with four other people! This was a mistake," she said regrettably.

"So now you call what we did a mistake?" asked A.J. "Just because of a phone call?"

"It was a wake-up call telling me we were rushing it. Yes, it was a mistake-a BIG mistake. We need sometime apart. Good-bye, A.J." She grabbed her keys and walked out of his bedroom.

A.J. watched her out his window as she backed out of his driveway and drove away. "Dammit!" he yelled as he banged his fist on his dresser.

As Patricia was driving home she noticed a small photo of A.J. on his dashboard. She burst into tears as she stopped at a red light. "Why did I leave?" she said to herself. "I won't lose him now. I love him." Shocked by her own words, she started crying even harder. "What have I done?" She turned up the volume of the radio, drowning out the sounds of her cries, along with the ringing of her car phone.

A.J. hung up the phone after trying to reach her at her car. He got dressed and decided to call her at her home.

Patricia walked in her house. The first thing she heard was the phone ringing. She hesitated to answer it, afraid of it being A.J., but picked it up anyway. "Hello?"

"Do you love me?" It was him.

She was startled by his question, and how seriously he said it. There was silence.

"Do you love me?" he asked again.

"Yes," she replied, not sounding sure of her answer.

"Then why did you say we were rushing it?" He sounded more serious now.

Patricia's tears stopped flowing down her cheek. "Why?!" she said angrily. "You don't think we were rushing it?!"

"No, I don't! It's not like we could've planned it!"

"Then I guess you didn't plan that I could be pregnant!"

A.J. froze. He didn't say a word.

"Ill take that as a no," she said in a much softer, and hurt voice. "Speechless, huh? Well, since you've chosen not to speak to me, I've chosen not to see you. For one moment I actually thought I truly loved you. Don't call me, don't come to my house. We're through." Patricia hung up the phone. She cried so hard, she could barely breathe. Feeling faint, she sat down in the corner of her room, with her head in her hands.

A.J. was still frozen in his place. The phone fell put of his hands. He looked into the mirror of the dresser he was standing in front of. As he looked down he came across a framed picture of Patricia. Out of pain, anger, and sadness, he took the picture and through it against the wall, leaving a mark on the wall, shattered glass, forever to be parted, and a heart, forever to be broken.
