Meaning: (Scottish) Nickname from Gael. "cam" - crooked, bent. "beul" - mouth. (crooked mouth). The spelling of the name was originally "Cambel". The nickname was first borne by Gillespie O'Duibhne, who lived at the beginning of the 13th Century and was the founder of the Clan Campbell. The users of this name ore known to have been around as a powerful family even in the time of the ancient kingdom of Dalriada, though the earliest Campbell to be found in written records in Gillespie of east-central Scotland, who had lands in this area granted to him in 1263. The family continued to hail from the county of Argyll in Scotland, and is one of the two largest clans today. The surname was often rendered in documents as "de bello campo' of the fair field", which led to the name sometimes being translated into Norman French as Beauchamp.

Notes for JOHN CAMPBELL, SR.: John Campbell (Sr.) was eighteen years old when he left home in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1728, and traveled from England on a ship bringing supplies to the colonies and came to Raleigh, North Carolina. He cleared some land for a crop and built a log cabin. His second year here, he sent word back home to his fiance to come on the next ship. He met the ship with a bushel of sweet potatoes to pay for her passage, and they were married by the ship captain. It is also said that he sold a large crop of pumpkins to send back to England. The family then grew and began to spread to Virginia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi, and Arkansas.

Notes for ALEXANDER CAMPBELL: He had a house full of children by both wives, and helped raise his brother John III. He came with his brothers from North Carolina to Arkansas (where his wife Ms. Louvin is buried -- somewhere along Crowley's Ridge) and then to North Mississippi and settled in Walnut, Tippah County, Mississippi, in 1836. He must have been quite a land-owner, because he supposedly gave each of his children 160 acres of land in 1836.
There is evidence that suggests that Alexander may have been married a third time, and that the Milly showing in the census above is one of these wives. She would have been Milly Redfearn, daughter of John William Redfearn, who was born 1803 in Randolph County, NC, and went to McNairy County, TN, in 1825, then on to Tippah County, MS, in 1836. In the book "The History of the Redfearn Family" by Daniel Huntley Redfearn, a letter dated 1843 is referenced mentioning one of his daughters being married to a Campbell, living nearby (Tippah MS), and mentioning a son (Daniel) being born then. Milly may also have been short for, or a version of Milberry, a family name.
Notes for UNKNOWN LOUVIN: Family lore says she is buried at Crowley's Ridge, Arkansas. For this to be true, the family would have moved from Tennessee to Arkansas after the birth of son Alfred in February 1829. The first child of Alexander's next wife, Ms. Bumpas(s), Branson Campbell, was born in 1841. So, Ms. Louvin's death, Alexander's next marriage, and their move from Arkansas back to Mississippi would all have occurred during this 10-12 year period, which is highly possible.
The more I wonder about her over the years, I wonder if her name was perhaps Loving, instead of Louvin. I originally got that name from my great uncle, who was elderly and giving me information from memory.
Notes for UNKNOWN BUMPAS: Her first name may have been Alsey or Alice. There is a marriage record for an Alexander Campbell and Alsey Bumpass on July 1, 1824, in Lawrence County, Tennessee. This could very well have been them, but I have no proof of that.

Notes for JOHN CAMPBELL III: John Campbell's family was among the first to settle in North Tippah County, Mississippi, in the early 1840's. He built a house with two large log rooms, with a fireplace in the west room, and one window. He later added a side room of all plank to the south side of the west room and a long porch to the north side of both rooms. A spring was nearby on the east side of the house. According to another "cousin" -- John Campbell and at least two of his brothers, Alexander Campbell and Gabriel Campbell, and Alfred Campbell, Alexander's son, moved from middle Tennessee near Nashville and settled south of the Ridge Road in Tippah County. This road was named Salem and Nubbin Ridge Road, and is now Highway 72. John Campbell was made overseer of this road in 1842. All of his land lay north of this road.

Notes for MARTIN A. CAMPBELL: Family members say he sang like a mockingbird. When the rest of the family was settling in Tennessee and Mississippi, Martin supposedly left home and headed to Arkansas. He was never heard from again by the rest of his family, but it is told that he began a family there and that we have many kin folk in Arkansas. It has also been said that the famous folk singer Glen Campbell may be directly descended from Martin, although this is not likely.
