He was engaged in farming until 1859 when the family moved from Alabama to Manitee Co, FL.  He shared in the estate of his father William as recorded in Butler Co. AL.  The summer of 1859 brought the Manitee river section the Andress family of Greenville AL.  Trekking from Mobile to Pensacola by cart, they had to wait two weeks for steamer passage to Shaw's Point (at the mouth of the Manitee river) where they settled.  Their home became the overnight tavern for passengers going and coming from Manitee, rowboats being used to convey the passengers to vessels too large to follow the channel up the river.

Following is a poem written by Nanny's sister Mrs. Watson.
Around my seems to hover swetly,
my sister as an angel dear, and when I
cry in distress she whispers " I am here."
She took death's bitter cup, drank all the contents
down-the intense pain left on her face; A smile instead
of a frown--She died without an enemy ought, but friends
had she; everybody loved her for she was good as
 one could be.
Just asleep her Soul immortal-Dwelling now beyound
earth's woes, free from pain and car and sorrow-sweet
and undisturbed repose--Peaceful be your sleep dear
sister-tis sweet to breathe your name-I loved you very
dear in life-In death I do the same.
