The first girl selected to become a pilot of Evangelion. She is called "First Child." Her career and genetic background have been erased from the records. She goes to Tokyo-3 municipal Jr. High school with Shinji and Asuka, but she doesn't have any friends other than these two. She started training for EVA since the Eva-project was in its early stages. So, she transferred to the school when she was in her 7th grade. 1 week before Shinji arrives at NERV she was wounded by the accident during a boot-up experiment, so at the beginning of the story, she was hospitalized. It is suspected that the cause of the accident is that her mind was not stable enough to control Evangelion Unit 0. She is quiet, and she never becomes emotional. She completes her duties perfectly.
