Growing up, Dessa was indoctrinated in the ways of her people. She learned which herbs were used for what ailment and the chants that went along the administering of these herbs. She also studied ancient Indian customs and rituals.
After several attempts at her own vision quests, Dessa gave up. She followed the procedures, fasted, observed the cleansing rituals but, the visions never came.
While Dessa was always an attentive student, she felt the teachings her grandfather administered were archaic and no longer applied to the world. It was not until she entered Starfleet Academy that she began to understand how important those early lessons proved to be. Her unique understanding of nature gave her a distinct advantage when it came to science. Here, she was able to not only grasp the intricacies of matter, energy and how the two could combine to form countless life forms, she also found she had an uncanny talent for botany and cataloging various forms of alien flora.
Her first assignment took her to the rain drenched planet of Ferenginar. Part of a research team sent to catalog and obtain samples of various herbs and plants for later medical scrutiny, Dessa was in her element. The teachings of her grandfather certainly proved to be invaluable.
Once the assignment on Ferenginar was complete, Dessa put in for starship duty. Eager to visit distant worlds and to learn all that space has to offer, she was assigned to the Exploratory Crews of the Federation.
As part of the screening process for space duty, Dessa was given countless tests. One was a psi aptitude evaluation. It was discovered that Dessa is completely psi null. She is a blank slate to other telepaths and cannot send or receive telepathic images or messages.
