Fuyuko is a rare soul in the fleet. Most born to the life of a deep spacer rarely leave the ranks to take up other tasks in life. To do so is to be shunned as an outcast and a traitor to the crew, the ship and the entire way of life.
Two events led to her departure. The first happened at the early age of 16. Radiation leakage from cargo they were carrying almost destroyed the ship. Only quick thinking on her part saved it. By ejecting the entire hold from the vessel, they were able to keep the radiation from spreading. Unfortunately, she had been in that hold at the time she released it from the ship. Between the vacuum and the severe exposure to radiation, she spent close to a month in treatment. Today, the only visible side effect is the snow white of her hair. The hidden effect is her complete sterility. Perhaps better facilities could have prevented both. The second event was the marriage of her sibling and her own impending union.
In the far reaches of space, far beyond the grasp of the federation, arranged marriages are not uncommon. With space aboard the freighters at a premium and the ties between families so important, it is necessary thing for parents to choose whom their children will marry. With her looks "disfigured" and her sterility, no marriage could be found for Fuyuko without a high cost. Between this and her brother bringing aboard a bride and starting a family, she quietly sought to alleviate the seeming misfortune she was bringing upon the ship Last Haiku. She applied to Starfleet Academy and was quickly accepted.
This was not the end of her woes. Of course she was now considered an outcast from family and the few friends she had, but a new malady had cropped up. A problem only seen in those born and raised between the stars. Fuyuko has a phobia about being out of an enclosed environment. A form of agoraphobia, many doctors find it a daunting problem as more and more people take to the lure of space travel never to return.
While not an exceptional student, Fuyuko's "liberties" with the Academy computer network are near legendary among the newest crop of cadets in the fleet today. What else was she to do if she was not able to join her friends and classmates outdoors? Between her skills in the computer sciences and more practical flight hours than most ship captains, she was able to secure a post aboard one of the new class of ships that is the pride of the fleet. She found herself before Captain Slurp of the USS Concorde, NCC 4178. She served him as the assistant science officer. Later, under the command of Captain Sushek, she attained the position of chief of science officer.
To date, she serves as commanding officer of the starship Teresh-Kah.
