Duo Maxwell was born on Colony L2 X-07751, in the L2 colony cluster. He was orphaned at the age of 5 when his parents died holding off a Cardassian invasion of their home planet, Saigonia. The planet was protected in space by 7 clusters of orbiting colonies. Each cluster contained approximately 10 colonies, all orbiting along the lagrange points of Saigonia and its two moons.
The Cardassians suffered heavy losses in the raid, including 30 ships destroyed or severely damaged, as well as 2,550,000 troops lost, some on the ships, but most on the landing parties. The Saigonians did not suffer as many losses, considering the fact that they were on their home turf. However, the losses were still staggering. Approximately 15 colonies were destroyed and 1.02 million lives lost, captured, or wounded.
Duo was sent to live with his godparents, who had survived the invasion. His godparents were scientists, which was not common on Saigonia until the Federation first arrived, even though they'd already had most of their space colonies up and running smoothly. They were able to teach him about science, starships, and the like, at a young age so that he could enter the Academy when he was old enough.
At the age of 10, they sent him to the premier dojo in the capital city to start his ritualistic training, since Saigonians were warriors by nature. Graduating early at the age of 14, he was referred, and sent, to the last remaining high-level sword-arts dojo in Kyoto. There he trained under the tutelage of Master Suoh Saito, the head of the dojo, honing his swordsmanship and defensive martial-arts, as well as his emotions. This was all in preparation for Starfleet Academy, which was his ultimate goal.
After that, he went to work at a spaceport as a security officer, where he met his best friend Hilde Schibecker. He joined Starfleet after being pressured to join by Hilde, saying, "I'll try to get in next year, so go now and wait for me." He went in and ended up graduating in the top 3 of his class, specializing in security, starship piloting, and tactical procedures. His minor ended up being in the command area, but he was sure he'd never get to sit in "the chair."
Duo ended up on the USS Phoenix, serving as its tactical officer and later, as the operations officer. He transferred to the USS Saratoga, which was then commanded by Captain Dillon. The crew of the Saratoga had to transfer to the USS Blackhawk after an accident all but destroyed the ship.
After a fiasco in which the crew of the USS Blackhawk encountered a field of severe radiation which led to them hallucinating about a war between the Q Continuum & an alliance between Species 8472 and the Borg, they were transferred to the USS Potemkin-C, which was a completely refitted and recommisioned version of the USS Potemkin-B, while the Blackhawk went into dry-dock to be cleansed & fixed for the new crew that awaited it.
The crew happily grew accustomed to their new, more spacious, ship and went on several important missions until Captain Dillon was called away from his command to teach at the Academy (or so his crew was told). As they lacked an XO, Duo, who was then a Lieutenant, saw his chance and assumed command as Temporary Commanding Officer while a suitable Captain was searched for amongst the ranks of other Starfleet ships.
After a long amount of time and despite being beset by what could be called a long string of bad luck, Duo ended up as permanent CO of the Potemkin-B and earned a promotion to the rank of captain. Now commanding the USS Potemkin-C, Duo works tirelessly for his crew, no matter what obstacles are in his way.
