When she was about 8, her mother found a dance program on the ship and enrolled Emily and Allyson in it to try to ease her children's boredom on the ship. Both of them loved it but Emily enjoyed the more classical ballet aspect.
Dance, strangely enough, helped Emily in her school work. It enabled her to focus more and allowed her to become more in touch with herself and her body. It was also at this time that it was found out that Emily's brain was structure very similar to a Vulcan or a Betazoid. Yet she was 100% Human. Also, she had very minute physical traits of many humanoid races in her body structure, the most noticeable being slightly pointed ears. The ships doctor, a Vulcan named D'rel, told her parents that the more they let Emily explore, the more she could possibly harness from this strange and unusual brain development.
When Emily was 9 she discovered the wonders of DNA. She was completely fascinated by it. It was then that she knew she wanted to be a scientist. She dove into her studies, constantly trying to find out more and more about this wonderful world of science.
Her sister had developed a love for animals and soon after her normal school time went off to be a vet. Strangely enough, her sister had a completely normal brain and body structure, unlike Emily. Her sister was also a very talented artist and dancer. Her sister now works on various starships taking care of animals and occasionally helping to discover new creatures on other planets.
On Emily's 15th birthday, the Captain of the ship allowed her to serve on the bridge as a minor science officer at the doctor's suggestion. The reasoning behind this was to let her mind grow since she was getting bored with most of school. It was on that day that the ship she was on was called to an emergency situation were a colony had been attacked. She stood on the bridge, watching in horror and awe as D'rel went down and tried to save as many as he could. It was at this point that Emily knew she wanted to be a doctor.
She then, with the help of the doctor who she had become good friends with, finished her basic school studies which would normally take 2 years in a little over a year. Along with this increased study, she also took basic medical classes from D'rel, continued serving as a minor officer but not in uniform and still danced now en point.
After completing school, Emily applied to both Johns Hopkins on Earth and the Vulcan Science Academy. With the help of D'rel she managed to get into both academies and work out a schedule were she could work at both places. At this time, without her knowing, D'rel notified Starfleet that he had a very promising student on his hands and that they should watch her and her development.
Emily's studies were not only complicated by being in two schools at once but by the fact that every two months she had to go from Earth to Vulcan or Vulcan to Earth. She was sent holographic class sessions from the planet she was absent from.
All of her teachers found her to be very bright but her Vulcan teacher found her almost unmanageable at times due to her hyperness and her inquiring questions. This excess hyperness was due to the fact that she had to stop dancing and also due to her Vulcan-Betaziod mind structure. Once this was realized, her Vulcan instructors not only made her take up dance again, but they also made her take Vulcan mind control techniques.
After only three years of med school, Emily graduated second in her class from Johns Hopkins, with a major in medicine, and a minor in biology. She immediately went into residency on Vulcan so as to finish up her last year at the Vulcan Science Academy. She graduated fourth in her class with degrees in both quantum and temporal mechanics and another degree in biology. She also had a new peace of mind that had come from rigorous mind control and dance. She still seemed to radiate her hyperness but now she could not only control most of it but also harness it to help her in her studies. She was slightly bored with her residency though, because she had trained not only as an all around doctor but also a trauma surgeon and there was not much activity on Vulcan.
It was at her graduation that D'rel approached her with an interesting proposal. He had talked to Starfleet several years ago about her and now they wanted her to come to Starfleet Academy to not only join Starfleet but also to finish her residency in San Francisco and occasionally on a starship. They had found her career of much interest and they also found her brain structure could be a unique addition to Starfleet. She gladly accepted the offer and the chance to allow her mind to explore strange new things.
While at SFA, the medical teams found her invaluable, as she advanced quickly in her studies. She kept in contact with her parents, sister and D'rel telling them all about her experiences. D'rel was quite happy when he found out the Vulcans had helped her harness her hyperness. During her time at SFA, her instructors found that she had a natural instinct to fly. This, along with her insights into the sciences made Emily very valuable to Starfleet. But they too, like the Vulcans, found her a little too energetic to handle at time. She made some friends at SFA, but many seemed to find either her too energetic or too advanced to truly make friends with. It was at this time that she found her love in the ancient cultures and how much she truly loved dance. She graduated second in her class with honors.
It was shortly after this graduation that she was approached by the ECF. She took the offer to explore the universe and now is assigned to the USS Endeavor as Chief Medical Officer. She still dances on the holodeck.
