Commander De'tana K'tev

Personal Profile: De'tana K'tev

ECF Directives Acceptance Pledge

I, De'tana K'tev hereby accept and promise to abide by as well as uphold all the Directives of the Exploratory Crews of the Federation.

De'tana was born while her father was on a business trip. When, on his return, he learned he had a bouncing baby girl, his (mild reaction for a Ferengi male) was simply to grumble something about another cursed female about the place and where was his money going to go when he kicked? Tanyla, although she said little, knew that without a male heir, her husbands money and property (including she and De'tana), would fall to his brother, who even by Ferengi business standards, was considered unscrupulous.

She gave the matter little thought until sometime after De'tana's second birthday, when she received word that they had found her husband dead a few kilometers from the building that housed his business. She fled the house soon after with the help of a family friend, who was able to warn her that Jakamar had probably been killed by his brother and if she didn't get away, De'tana might soon follow. Apparently Jakamar had stated in his will that half the family fortune was to be put aside for De'tana and given to her on her twenty-fifth birthday, or her wedding. The uncle had already tried to find away around it, but Jakamar has made sure the will was perfectly in line with Ferengi law (such as it is). Morg was not at all happy about only getting half, and was perfectly willing to hunt down and kill both mother and daughter to get the rest.

To escape, Tanyla and De'tana got onto a transport and fled to one of the few places they knew would be safe from Morg and whatever power he could bring to bear, Vulcan.

Tanyla was afraid they were going to get thrown off the planet almost as soon as they arrived when De'tana hugged a Vulcan professor who was in the space port when they arrived. Fortunately, Professor K'Tev learned about their plight and let them stay at his home on the outskirts of the Vulcan capital until they could get on their feet. While she sought work, Tanyla had De'tana made K'Tev's ward in case her in-law caught up with them.

Life on Vulcan was fairly uneventful until one day three years later, when one of the children upset De'tana and she ran off into the desert. When Tanyla came outside later to call De'tana in, she was nowhere to be found. K'Tev and Tanyla learned that the five year old had wandered out into the desert and began organizing search parties. Before they could set out though, someone saw De'tana walking down the street toward her house. She appeared tired and hot, but otherwise fine. The question for K'Tev was how a little Ferengi girl could wander into the featureless Vulcan desert and find her way back? When asked, De'tana could only say that she "just knew where she was."

Nothing more came of it for a long time, except that K'Tev decided to tutor De'tana himself. Her favorites were astronomy, ancient Vulcan history and geology. While she studied logic, she decided not to use it to the exclusion of a healthy dose of irrationality now and again.

For her fifteenth birthday, she was given permission to travel to the Vulcan sister world T'Khut (known as Charis in the federation registry) on a freighter for a student geological survey. Halfway to T'Khut, the freighter suffered a computer malfunction. The pilot and copilot were injured and knocked unconscious in the explosion. De'Tana wasted no time in bringing up the flight manual and brought the out of control ship to successfully back to Vulcan Space Control.

After discussing the incident with De'tana, the family Elders and Vulcan Space Control, K'Tev came to the conclusion that De'tana had a natural spatial sense and proceeded to train her in Vulcan mind techniques to help harness it properly. For over two years, K'Tev, with the assistance of many from the Vulcan Science Academy, helped to refine De'tana's ability. The studies came to a close when De'tana successfully plotted a course from Vulcan to Earth without any computer assistance.

On her eighteenth birthday, De'tana journeyed across the desert to the Temple of T'Vet to meditate on where she should go next with her life. On her return, she announced to her mother and K'Tev that she was going to apply to Starfleet Academy, with the intention of joining the Exploratory division. She was admitted, but spent a painful time learning that her spatial sense interfered with her normal senses when she was in a holodeck or training simulator. The Academy instructors were puzzled by her scores until she was given control of a real shuttle. There her Vulcan training and natural abilities allowed her spatial sense to act at its best.

She was eventually able to overcome the problem though and worked her way through the Academy with passing grades. She now serves aboard the USS Vigilant.
