Shortly after Keri's 6th birthday, her telepathic abilities began to emerge. Too young to fully cope with the abilities that normally do not present themselves until puberty in Betazoids, her parents contacted Dr. Sorrel, a longtime family friend and highly respected healer on Vulcan. Dr. Sorrel, understanding the risk to Keri should she not receive intense instruction on mental shielding; immediately agreed to help her deal with the tremendous onslaught of others' minds before it caused permanent damage to her psyche.
Keri spent four years with Dr. Sorrel and his family learning Vulcan mind techniques. A side effect of this was an extraordinary sense of calm & peace that emanated from her and an extreme reluctance to use her telepathic abilities unless asked to do so. Vulcan training had not only strengthened her telepathic abilities, but taught her restraint in sending her thoughts uninvited to others. It also gave her a sense of balance & harmony she could not have achieved elsewhere.
Keri returned to Betazed at the age of 10 and resumed her studies. She had by then decided she would either become a doctor or a research scientist. Her bond with her brother Deral became even stronger in the years to follow.
Several months after Keri's 16th birthday, her brother was mortally wounded in an unusual shuttle accident. Keri and her parents were at his side in the medical facility when he died of severe internal injuries. It was at that moment Keri decided to become a doctor.
She threw herself into her studies and completed high school within 6 months of her brothers death, graduating 3rd in her class. She applied to and was granted entrance to Betazeds' renowned Medical University. Four years later she finished 2nd in her class with a specialty in Neurosurgery as well as Internal Medicine. Dr. Chandra spent the next two years serving her internship at BMU. She kept in close contact with Dr. Sorrel & his family during her medical training.
For the following two years, Dr. Chandra practiced medicine as a resident and taught specialty courses in Neurosurgery at BMU. Wanting to expand her education, she applied to & was accepted by the Vulcan Science Academy.
At the VSA, Dr. Chandra excelled in Quantum Temporal Mechanics and Xenobiology. Four years later, she graduated with honors and was surprised and pleased when Dr. Sorrel approached her with the idea of joining Starfleet. Contacting an old friend at Fleet HQ, Dr. Sorrel told him about Dr. Chandra's past and achievements. Impressed by her achievements, determination & adaptability, Fleet Admiral Ivan Dean highly recommended Dr. Chandra to SFA.
During Dr. Chandra's four years at SFA, she became less reserved. Although her Vulcan training remained firmly in place, she became much more adventurous, allowing her sense of humor to surface more often. She learned to trust her classmates and their judgment.
Upon graduating SFA, Dr. Chandra was assigned to Starbase 11 as an Assistant Research Medical Officer. After four years of research, she requested and was granted a transfer to the USS INTREPID. On stardate 53812.9 Dr. Chandra sucessfully passed her exams in psychiatry. She was given the dual position of Chief Medical Officer and Counselor by Captain Sybok.
On stardate 53908.9, Keri Chandra was promoted to the rank of captain by Admiral John M. Williamson and was given command of the USS INTREPID. A part of her clings to the hope of finding Captain Sybok who has been listed as missing in action.
On stardate 54042.9, while on a routine recovery mission, Captain Chandra telepathically sensed Captain Sybok. Knowing he was in grave danger, Keri disobeyed a direct order issued by Fleet Admiral Dean and proceeded to the unstable and forbidden area of space where she knew Captain Sybok to be. Risking her ship and her career, Keri and her crew managed to retrieve Captain Sybok who at the time had slipped into a coma.
Keri, seeing only one way to help her former Captain, initiated a mind meld with him. It was during this meld that Keri came to know Sybok's true feelings for her. Keri, in turn, opened her mind completely to Sybok and allowed him to see how she felt about him as well. It was during this meld that Sybok and Keri bonded.
Upon returning to Starbase 7, Keri was reduced in rank for disobeying a direct order. Although commended for returning a valued officer to Starfleet, it was determined that a punishment was necessary to set an example to other Starfleet officers.
Keri Chandra was demoted to the rank of Commander and given the option to remain on Intrepid as her first officer. Keri happily accepted the position and served with her bondmate on the USS Intrepid.
Then, on state 54403.9, Keri was once again promoted to the rank of Captain and given command of the USS Intrepid. Keri tried to refuse the promotion but Admiral Braman as well as Fleet Captain Sybok insisted she accept. Keri promptly fainted when she learned she would be given the Intrepid to command. Keri accepted her responsibility and did her job well but, she never really wanted command and also missed her bondmate terribly.
On stardate 54461.9, the unthinkable happened. While enroute to Sreaya III, The Intrepid encountered a Borg like sphere. Keri ordered an away team to investigate and 3 officers lost their lives. Keri was devastated. Worse, she had approved a Borg like drone to be beamed to sick bay II. The drone, upon being taken partially out of stasis, infected the EMH and main computer with an undetectable virus. This caused the EMH to make serious errors in the treatment and immunization of half of the 472 Sreayans destined for Starfleet Academy.
When Keri became aware of the deaths of the 212 Sreayans, she became hysterical. She tore apart sick bay II, disabled the EMH and finally ended up in the Counselor's office. It was there she told Kate and Sybok that she demanded to be removed from command status. Sybok, seeing his bondmate was distressed and unable to cope with the loss, accompanied her to Admiral Braman's office on Starbase 7. It was decided that Fleet Captain Sybok would resume command of the Intrepid and Keri would assume her previous role as executive officer.
On Stardate 55151.9, the captains chair was once again pulled out for Keri. After extensive counseling and encouragement from her bondmate, Keri agreed to give command another try.
After commanding the Sovereign class starship, USS Concorde, Keri found that she missed her mate and eventually, requested a transfer back to the USS Intrepid. While exploration has always held a fascination for Keri, there was still something that was missing in her life. When Sybok was reassigned, she remained on the Intrepid as executive officer and formed a genuine and lasting friendship with Captain Gabriel Holmes and his wife, Taye. Still, an element was missing. Keri found herself drawn to sick bay during her off time and would spend many hours in the research lab or just checking up on patients. Medicine had been her first calling and it still had a hold on her.
Although she never spoke of it, her bondmate knew of her feelings and when Sybok was placed in command of Outpost R-631, he offered Keri the position of chief medical officer.
It was a short time later that the Outpost was reclassified and declared a supply station. Keri was automatically transferred to the USS Teresh-Kah. She currently serves as chief medical officer.
