Surreal Perdition - 'Surreal Incisions from the Subconscious Eyrie of Perdition' -Haunting Ambience

No doubt rivalling Bal-Saggoth in the 'longest album title of all time stakes' the music is not unlike the title in its enigmatic, bizarre and undecipherable state. The album is broken into three parts each containing three songs which blend as an extremely interesting journey into musical realms which are almost beyond description.

Embracing all that is the Avant-Garde movement within black metal with a touch of classical inspiration they create a highly atmospheric and visually inspiring release which at times is purely chaotic, at times eerie, melancholy, haunting, ambient and always dark. Again I shall parallel them to Bal-Saggoth, 'The Black Moon Broods Over Lemuria' era, however this parallel is merely a distant one as Surreal Perdition is only reminiscent of the darkness and majesty which is found in this first Bal-Saggoth release. In addition tho this they also begin to Embody the experimentation of such bands as 'Satanic Art' era Dodhiemsgard and early Arcturus. The band also manages this breadth of change and experimentation excellently for a first release without sounding awkward or cluttering their sound.

The guitar work on this album is extremely interesting and different, creating technical, twisted melodies and moods. The keyboard is grandiose and used to virtual perfection. The screeching vocals are brilliant when varied though at times are overdone and call for more of this interesting variation which includes chanting, some great effects and deathy growls. Overall the latter half of the CD is the best with tracks 6 onwards rating as highly enchanting and alluring highlights.

No matter how many times I listen to this CD it still draws me into its wonderful intricacies and moods. It is outstanding for a first release, though there is room for the band to refine their sound and I'm sure that in the future Surreal Perdition will be releasing some brilliant music. This album does not allow me to be passive and as the title suggests is like some kind of dream with all the surreality of a dream- state, from the realms of nightmares to the bizarre and serene, Surreal Perdition Creates as enticing musical journey. I highly recommend this release!
