| I once asked my Father if he knew anything about women.He answered"What do you want to know?"...I was just a shame faced pup then,and didn't really know what to ask,but I said"You know;how do you get a girl to like you?"I muttered,and wouldn't look him in the eyes....He mulled this over a bit,and said"Boy;look at me!"in a voice that I only heard him use when something was very important.I quickly looked up at him,and there was a sparkle in his eye.He said"I could tell you that they like romance;bringing them flowers,or gifts,or they love poems that make them feel special,but anyone can do those things,and not understand anything about a woman!"...I then asked,"but Father;I'm confused.If I do those things,and it does no good;then why do them in the first place?".....He softened his voice,and smiled at me,"I didn't say they would do no good.I said you would learn nothing."Here he paused for a moment,and then continued,"Son.Did you know that a woman,like your Mother,loves just one thing about a man?".....This surprised me,"No.What is that one thing?"I asked..."Do you really want to know Son?",he asked me very slowly,with a strangeness in his voice I had never heard before.I felt as if I was poised on the brink of a cliff.One wrong step could send me over the edge."Yea yes"I stammered,"because I know Momma loves you very much,and I want that same thing someday!",I answered,hardly daring to breathe......This time he laughed out loud,and hugged me until I truly thought I might not be able to catch my breath...."My Son!My Son!"he cried in a voice,full of laughter,and pride."You do not need to ask me questions!You have the answer already!Just remember it,and you will have no problem.I can practically guarantee it!...."But Father"I asked"It seems so simple.Isn't there more to it?I thought you would tell me how to understand about women!"..He stopped laughing,but a wide smile was still on his face,and he told me,"Son;I never said I understand women.I doubt any man does,but I learned a long time ago about one thing,just one,that a woman loves from a man,Remember the answer you gave me.Never forget it,and you'll understand all you need to know in due time.".... ..... It's been years now,and I never forgot the words we spoke,or the truth I finally learned by remembering them.I sometimes think my dad must have been a very wise man.How else can you explain something so complex by calling it,simply..."one thing?" |
