| I loved my mother's oldest sister;Aunt Pauline;more than any of my other aunts,or uncles... Why?Good question, and I'll try to answer it... We left Kentucky when I was just a boy.You see my father had died, and Mom's folks lived out west in Arizona. So,we packed up,and away we went... Well,I didn't know my mother's folks, being so young and all,but who should be the first I met?You guessed it.Aunt pauline!... She,and Uncle Melvin(now there's another story, but it'll have to wait)took us in and treated us so well that I liked her immediately! She showed us around Phoenix, and took us out for pizza, and mexican food. Before then I wouldn't have known what a pizza was if you showed me a picture, and as for mexican food?....I do believe that was my first addiction!..So hot that tears stream down your face, and you're calling for water, and trying to drink some at the same time!..Man I love the stuff!.. I don't want you to think that's the only reason we got on so well... Let me see...hmmm.... Have you ever had a favorite chair that is so comfortable that you can just sink into it,and feel like you're on a cloud, and it doesn't matter what it looks like,or anything, because it just wraps you up better than a room full of pillows? That's her for sure! You always were welcome no matter what!... Not only was she kindhearted, but we enjoyed the same things. When she retired from being a Nurse;she took up painting, and it was only a short while before she was doing some excellent work. Now;I'm no great artist, but I know what I like, and I think,in some part, what good art is...She used to have her brushs, and easel out;painting this,or that, and I'd be lying on the floor with her pastels, sketching whatever came to mind. That was a problem with me,but what I lacked in discipline,I made up for in imagination, but this is her story,so we'll forget about that for now... We,plain, and simple, just loved each other, and I could write a book, and never tell all the things we did.Like going to the zoo,and tossing peanuts to the monkeys;I include myself in that statement, and I'm sure she'd agree,or going over to one of the desert parks that are so beautiful out west, and just having an old fashioned pic-nic;with me climbing around the cliffs, and trees like a monkey... It's been more than a few years since I last saw her, because I live in the south now,but I'll never forget how much fun I had;nor especially, how much peace,I got, when I visited;my favorite Aunt Pauline... |
