Breeding Bits &
Pieces
Along
the Way
Pictured above is the original Morgan
County Courthouse located in Somerville,
MorganCo, Alabama. My great grandmother,
grandmother, my mother and I have all, in our
childhoods, played on the wall surrounding
it. Good times and great memorie!
The following is a collection of bits &
pieces that I have picked up along the
way in my search...perhaps, one day they
will fit into my family puzzle...some do
already, but only need entering.

Earnie,
The information about the Breedens
that you posted comes from a petiton drafted
by a group of settlers in the KY Co to the
governor for soldiers to help with the
Indians. The petition states that it was
Henry and two of his sons that were killed
while at the lick getting salt.

Quoting from page 423: "With the opening of
the spring of 1788, the Indians began, again,
to disturb settlements, and on the 20th of
April, came into the Rye Cove settlement and
carried off three boys and a negro man, two
of the boys being the sons of Thomas Carter,
who then represented Russell County in the
General Assembly. Early in the month of
March, a party of Cherokees visited the
settlements on the lower Holston, wounded one
man and carried off about a hundred horses,
and in the month of June, 1788, four men were
killed in Russell county, and three men were
killed and scalped on the Black mountain. One
of the Elmires, three of the BREEDINGS
and Neal Roberts, from the New Garden
settlements in Russell county, were found on
Black monutain, killed and scalped."

Subject: [ALMORGAN] HOG HOLLOW
I am looking for "HOG HOLLOW". My great- grandfather, Amos Young Amerson, picked up his two nephews in Hog Hollow and went to Decatur to become their Guardian in 1865. The children's father, JOHN GILMORE AMERSON, and mother, NANCY BREEDING had died. The boys' names are John Bridle and Benjamin Gilmore Amerson. We believe that Amos Young Amerson's mother, Elizabeth McDonald Amerson, and his sister, Elizabeth Amerson Salyers, were living in Blount at the time. They are all shown on the 1866 census in Blount.
John Gilmore and Nancy Breeding Amerson with sons were shown on the 1860 census in Aston Store, Blount Co. Alabama 1860 census near his brother, William McDonald Amerson, and wife, Julia Ann Hawkins, with children.
We do know the John Gilmore owned property in Morgan Co. also.
Thanks for your help in advance!

Subject: [ALMORGAN] Estate of Samuel Breeding
Here is an order splitting the land of Samuel Breeding who died 4/15/1852. It is in Book 10, page 398 of the Morgan Co., Probate Court. I have several questions regarding this document. The first is what date was it signed? If it were signed after 12/1/1852 Elizabeth should be referred to as Elizabeth Draper, as she married David Q. Draper that date. If after 10/10/1855 Levisa should be Levisa Russell, as she married John W. Russell that date. Samuel, Levisa, James and John were all minors at that time and property would have been given to a guardian until they reached majority. Please note that this is 1200 acres of prime farmland surrounding Center Springs, more toward the river. In 1860 census, Samuel's estate, James, John Mason, and Telitha, the widow are shown owning over 130 slaves. You would think that someone with that many assets could afford a lawyer to draft a will.
Book 10, page 398 Morgan Co., Alabama probate Court records:
This day came William Breeding & Tho's E. Grantland, two of the Administrators of the Estate of Samuel Breeding, Deceased, and filed this petition for a division of the lands of which said decedent died seized and possessed and in fee simple, particularly describing said lands as the NW1/4 of Sect.14, T6 R2, & the NE 1/4 of the NW1/4 of Sect. 29, T6 R2 & the NW 1/4 of the SW 1/4 of Sect. 14, T6 R2, and the NE 1/4 of the SW 1/4 of Sect. 10, T6 R2, & the NE 1/4 of Sect 15, T6 R2 & the E side of the NW 1/4 of Sect. 10, T6 R2 & the W Side of the W ½ of the NE 1/4 of Sect. 10, T6 R2 & the N side of the NE 1/4 of Sect. 15, T6 R2. & the NE 1/4 of the SW 1/4 of Sect 10, T6 R2 & the N ½ of the NW 1/4 of Sect 8, T6 R2 & the NW 1/4 of the NE 1/4 of Sect. 8, T6 R2, & the N1/2 of the W ½ of the SE 1/4 of Sect 20, T6 R2& the E ½ of the SE 1/4 of Sect 21, L6 Range 2, & the SW 1/4 of Sect 15, T 6 R 2 and the said Administrators stating in their said petition that they believe that the said above mentioned land (Dower excepted) can be fairly, equally and beneficially divided among the heirs and legatees of said estate. It is therefore ordered by the Court that a writ of division issue to the Sheriff of said County Commanding him to Summons five discrete freeholders, residents of said county, connected with the parties neither by blood or marriage and entirely disinterested, who first being sworn for that purpose are required, empowered and authorized to allot and set off fairly and equally the respective shares of the Legatees and heirs of said decedent (To wit) To Horace Draper in sight of his wife Lucinda, Thomas E. Grantland in sight of his wife Emiline, William Breeding, Elizabeth Breeding, Samuel Breeding, Levisa Breeding, James Breeding & John Breeding all heirs and legatees to said estate and the said Sheriff together with the Commissioners are . . . .
