Brief Aikido History

The founder of present day Aikido Master Morihei Uyeshiba (born 1883 died 1969) studied these Martial Arts -

  • Kito Ryo
  • Aioi Ryu
  • Daito Ryu
  • Jujitsu
  • Bayonet Arts
  • Kendo
  • Kudo
  • Bukitsu

    culminating in the perfection of his new martial art, Aikido. Until after the War, Aikido was only taught to noble families in Japan.

    AIKIDO: Harmoney of Mind and Body

    DOJO: Training Hall

    KIEKO: Practice or training

    REI: Begin

    TETAMI: Mats

    KEIKOGI: Training Suit

    YAME: Stop

    SENSEI: Teacher/Instructor

    Basic Types of Throws or Locks

    Shihonage = Four Direction Throw

    Kotegaeshi = Small Hand Twist

    Iriminage = Enter Body Throw

    Kaitennage = Spin Throw

    Tenchinage = Heaven and Earth Throw
