Liverpool's Campbell talks

Liverpool will attempt to beat the chasing pack in the race to sign Sol Campbell by holding transfer talks about a move for the England defender.

Anfield officials are expected to meet with Campbell's representatives within days to discuss a potential deal after his decision to quit Spurs.

But it has also been reported in Italy that Inter Milan are also strong contenders and have held lengthy talks with Campbell.

Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier is an admirer of the 27-year-old, who has confirmed he is leaving White Hart Lane after rejecting a reported £80,000-a-week deal.

And Liverpool may have an edge over Inter, with Campbell reportedly reluctant to move abroad and a Champions League place on offer at Anfield.

Houllier is already making his transfer plans for the summer, with Coventry City's young goalkeeper Chris Kirkland another possible target.

But Liverpool's first move, as they bask in the glory of winning the treble of the Uefa Cup, the FA Cup and the Worthington Cup and a place in the Champions League, will be to sound out Campbell.

Liverpool are prepared to make Campbell one of British football's highest paid players, but they are unlikely to bow to claims that he wants a total package worth £130,000-a-week.

Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal have also been linked, with Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Barcelona also registering an interest.

But Liverpool are determined to strengthen their squad, and the fact they could get Campbell without paying a transfer fee will increase their financial firepower when it comes to personal terms.

Houllier has built his rejuvenated Liverpool around the central defensive partnership of Sami Hyypia and Stephane Henchoz.

But he has proved he is willing to add to even the strongest departments in his team when he added £11m Emile Heskey and Jari Litmanen to his attacking options.
