1. MY EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY

1.1. ON THE PURPOSE OF EDUCATION

During the middle age, a teacher was the center of knowledge. He dictates what is good or bad. Student who followed the teacher was a good student and anyone who questioned the teacher was a bad student. Today, a student should treated as an adult. A teacher should communicate with his student in a rational manner. A teacher should be happy if his student can reason well. He should also acknowledge that there were times that a student is better than he is. Educators should find a way to prevent students to become very dependent on the teacher especially in decision-making. An educated person is one who can calculate the consequences of event that could possibly happen. To me, the purpose of education is to prepare a person to be an independent decision-maker.

1.2. ON THESIS AND RESEARCH

I knew many libraries in the Philippines who kept their theses collections in heavily locked bookshelves as if they were keeping pirated software. Students usually were not allowed to photocopy these collections. To me, a thesis should be a public domain and it should be open to public criticism.
