BARROW
Sadie Neakok, 88
Former Barrow Magistrate Sadie Brower Neakok, 88, died June 13, 2004, in her Barrow home surrounded by family.
A service was Thursday in Barrow.
Mrs. Neakok was born March 19, 1916, in Barrow to Charles Brower, one of the first white settlers there, and Asiang- gataq, an Inupiaq woman. She spent her childhood in Barrow, where her father ran a whaling station. Neakok left Barrow to attend high school in San Francisco from 1930 to 1934, to work for Eklutna Vocational School in 1935 and to pursue college studies at the University of Alaska Fairbanks from 1937 to 1939. Then she returned to Barrow for good. She married Barrow whaling captain Nathaniel Neakok on July 17, 1940, and together they raised 13 children.
Mrs. Neakok was devoted to serving Alaskans, particularly the Inupiat people of the North Slope. She was a Bureau of Indian Affairs teacher from 1939 to 1940 and 1945 to 1947, a public health volunteer from 1946 to 1950 and the Barrow social worker from 1954 to 1960. In 1958, she was ordained as the first woman elder of the Utqiagvik Presbyterian Church. In 1960, shortly after statehood, she was appointed magistrate for Barrow and served as the Alaska Court System's sole judicial representative for the vast North Slope region from the only court facility that existed then -- her kitchen table. Her influence on the state's legal system extended beyond Barrow through her work training other magistrates at regional and statewide conferences.
In 1987, UAF awarded Neakok an honorary doctor of laws degree. She also received numerous other awards for her life's work. In 1989, the University of Washington Press published her biography, "Sadie Brower Neakok, An Inupiaq Woman" by Margaret Blackman.
