This is not a five star resort. My friend and I stayed at the
Royal Solaris last week and were very
disapointed. The all-inclusive resort is on its way out and is
failing under poor managment.
The food is low quality (camp-style). All dinners were buffet
consisting of the same food as the night
before.
Only one restaurant (buffet) was open for dinner and it was poor. The
hotel advertises 3-4 restaurants, but
none were open. Fish was labeled to be salmon or mahi mahi, but
was clearly some tasteless white fish. All
meat was over-cooked, flavorless and tasted like jerkey. No decent
vegetables or salad. The best food was
at the snack bar.
The front desk staff was particularly rude and disinterested. Many staff
members were just standing around
and when asked for assistance were not helpful. Front desk staff would
say they would do something, but
when we returned as directed, nothing was done and they appeared baffled.
Angel (concierge) was the
exception. He was helpful and nice.
Upon arrival, the front desk staff did not direct us to the room and
when asked they pointed in the
direction of the elevator. Well, we knew we could handle it from there.
Our room was the 400 series;
however, there is no fourth floor - 3 was the highest floor # in the
elevator. Pressing 3 led us to rooms in
the 600. Eventually, we learned that we were to press 1 - which lead
to rooms in the 1400 series. Upon
exiting the elevator there are no posted room signs that indicate the
400 series. Eventually we figured it out.
Signs directing which banks of room are where would be helpful. That,
or helpful staff...
The hotel itself is in disrepair. This is particularly bothersome because
it is a new resort. Broken light
fixtures with exposed wiring, burned out light bulbs, cracks and broken
plaster, large sections of tiles
missing and splits in the wooden room doors were common. The tile on
the pool bottoms was missing in
large areas (3-4 feet in diameter). Some guests found it entertaining
to find the loose tiles on the bottom
and bring them to the pool edge.
The grounds were only marginally maintained with many weeds and uninteresting
landscaping. There were
not enough umbrellas for the guests at pool side.
The room was adequate, but only one towel, one key for two people (they
didn't have a second), no
shampoo, no coffee (but a coffee maker/condiments), no hotel information
guide, no paper and getting to
the room is an adventure. It took two days to get a second key and
the manager had to borrow our key
for a day to go to town to get a copy made!
At least half of the hotel is closed down. It is suffering and we were
sorry to see that, but our vacation time
and $ is limited, so we were very sorry we selected this hotel. We
did hear that the neighboring all-inclusive
was everything the visitors had hoped for - fantastic food, drinks,
staff and quality.
Staff entertainment was sad. One night the hotel director came
on stage and apologized for the hotel and
asked that we all get up and join hands in song. It was too much
to take.
This is a 2.5 star hotel - not recommended.
