Trip report day 1

Well, Let us get started:

Day 1 was a travel day with much anticipation of a great week in Cabos. Joni and I are about the world’s biggest Royal Solaris fanatics. Heather, our 8-year-old was mad because we were not returning to the Royal Solaris in Cancun. We wanted to see the new Royal Solaris even though a trip to Cabos would break our string of annual vacations to Cancun.

We were driving to Houston from Lafayette, Louisiana in order to take advantage of some frequent flyer tickets. American had cancelled our original flight so we were going to have to return a day early. A take it or leave it proposition from the wonderful people who own that airline. We lose a day of vacation with no compensation; American had pulled out of our city so to get the free tickets we had to start our trip with a 3-hour drive. No big deal, just a hassle that we should have seen as a sign of things to come.

The www.clubsolaris.com website tells you about a heated pool, 7-different shows and lots of other stuff. We had been to the Cancun resort and always loved our stays. We figured from the website that the Cabos Resort would be as good, or maybe even better since the buildings were all brand new!

We finally get to Cabos at 8:45 that evening and immigration and Customs takes about 5-minutes. I guess that is an advantage of arriving late in the day. Twenty minutes later and we are at the resort!!! We rode to the resort with some nice people from Iowa who had also been to the Cancun Solaris and wanted to see the Cabos resort, assuming like us that it was going to be a fantastic week.

We arrive at a ghost town. A huge beautiful lobby that has NOBODY in it. 9:15 and there is no party going on, not one sole other than the bartender at the lobby bar. In Cancun the lobby is “rocking” at 9:15. We register at the desk – no VIP service like in Cancun at the 7th floor. Registration took a few minutes longer than normal because they had trouble finding our reservation. They finally get it and we are off to our “Studio”.

Studio???? This is a small hotel room with two double beds and a Murphy bed. There must be some mistake??? Back down to the desk to find out that what we have is correct. This room is about ¾ the size of a Cancun room, and in Cancun they normally give us two rooms. They say this room is to sleep 6 people? That would be six very crowded people. We then notice that the bath has no tub. Now when you get two rooms, one with a shower and one with a tub is okay, but this is unacceptable. Not at all what were had been led to think we were getting.

There is a nice color TV with a cable system of mixed Spanish and English stations There is a very pretty headboard that covers both beds – and a nice balcony overlooking the pool.

Off to Café Solaris for some long awaited dinner. All they have left is pasta and sauce – no meat? Come on this is a joke. We take a walk around the hotel to see what we can see and talk to a staff member who tells us that they are at about 35% occupancy, and the resort next door only has 12 rooms that are occupied. Los Cabos is VERY UNCROWDED – little did we know that this would be very much against us for the entire week.

Our first impression is that even though the room is small that this place is peaceful. The resort at night is beautiful, but the Cancun resort would be “rocking and rolling” right now. Well – this is a new and different resort. Let’s not compare so fast, but it’s hard to not compare the resorts and the location. I can’t believe I’m saying this – 10:15 and we retire to our room. There’s NOTHING TO DO and CSL is 35 minutes away.
