Daves Colorfull Radios Page 4Welcome to page four of my colorfull radios. In tne mid 1930s styling started to change. Boxy was out and curves and streamlining was in. Airplanes and automobiles were the first to widely go to streamlining. Some called this the modern look while others called it art deco. Boing and Lockheed went this way with the airplanes they made. Chrysler with its Airflow in 1934 was the first in the auto industry to adopt streamlining. General Motors, Ford, and the others followed soon after. This style soon caught on in the other industries. Radio was one of them. More curves were added to designs. Everything had a a sweeping look to it. Wood and plastic cabinets made by the manufactures took on this shape. Enjoy the examples on the next few pages.

Sparton Model 511
Here is the Sparton model 511 table set. Many manufactures offered high styled little table sets. Money was still tight in the later 1930s and people did not have a lot of extra money to spend. Radio sales were rapidly rebounding scince 1934 but the manufactures started selling the table sets as extra sets along with the consoles which were used in the living rooms in most homes. The Sparton 511 was a typical example of a highly styled set. Nice curved right side along with horizontal fins across the front and going around the side. Also a curved dial is part of the design of this radio. Many models also had the molded handle sweepng across the top so this radio could be carried from room to room. Today this type of styling is very popular among radio collectors. This photo is from Classic Radio Gallery and is used with permision from them. This photo is copywrited protected. Sparton Model 506
1935 Sparks Worthington came out with some very coorfull highly designed table sets. They went to an outside designer for the designs of theese radios. Walter Darwen Teaque designed some of the radios while Raymond Lowey did some others. The materials used were plastic wood and glass. The glass was a mirriord finish in several colors. This one the 506 is circular in design while others were more box shaped in thier design. The 506 is a small table model but there was also availible one that the diameter of the circle was 40" in diameter. The circular models are quite rare and are not seen that often today. |
1937 Philco Model 37-610
In 1937 Philco came out with its streamline models. The 37-610 is one of them. This radio has many nice styling touches. The rounded edges on the right side along with the sweeping curved leftside make this radio quite attractive. The blending of the extensions of the grill work bars across the face in different veniers adds to the look also. Both a oval and round dial were offered on this model. Look on the bottom and the dark stained base sweeps up along the left side curve and then stops. This to is a nice added touch to the design of this radio. This radios style is a tour de force!
