pamban.jpg (55516 bytes)

IN 5.1 I could not photograph much in the fifth gallery when I visited in Nov. 1997 as most of the photographs of those grand station buildings had all been taken down. This is a pic of the Pamban bridge, a star attraction in Indoor Gallery # 5. (pic. scanned the NRM guide of 1992.)

acch.jpg (66128 bytes)

IN6.1 The last display gallery hosts this rather dated model of an air-conditioned chair car.

dmuface.jpg (47590 bytes)

IN6.2 True to its name of depicting the modern side of the IR is  this pic on the wall of the sixth indoor gallery, depicting the business end of a spanking new diesel multiple unit. This pic shows the power car only.

emumodel.jpg (46119 bytes)

IN6.3 Another prize catch of the NRM is this model of an electrical multiple unit. This was shot by me in 1983. When I visited in 1997, it was not possible to approach the model at such close quarters, due to re-organization of the buildinginterior for airconditioning.

unigauge.jpg (71184 bytes)

IN6.4 This map in Indoor Gallery # 6 shows the progress made by the IR in 'Project Unigauge', a surprisingly successfully being implemented programme of tearing up all mg and ng tracks in India (barring the hill railways) and replacing them with bg tracks. The is to minimize delays in transhipment etc. by having one uniform rail gauge all over the country. Most of the important mg routes are already history now, and have been replaced by bg track.

wcm1model.jpg (43041 bytes)

IN6.5 This is a model of an English Electric built EG/1 electric engine, (later WCM/1). These engines were the largest of the WCMs,  built in 1954.  Several were rebuilt in 1968. These grand ladies were still in active service till 1999. This model was originally kept in the first gallery, but has now been moved to the last.
