Q. Alright so give us some background info, who’s in the band? When did you form? What made you want to start Chillerton?
we formed about 3 years ago (about a year after jets started) when i lived with bailey and i played guitar (a lot). me and bailey both had a love for melodic punk rock (ala gunmoll) and i guess with jets playing much heavier stuff and me not playing guitar, we just sort of decided to start a slower/ softter melodic punk band. bailey new greg from the island, and knew him from playing drums in game show host (for a little while). we both thought he was a good choice (maybe the only choice! - joke!) and we booked our first practice, and bailey and greg HATED all my riffs. on the second practice - i had written cider justice/ junkie and we'd found our sound.
Q. Have any of you been in other bands previous to chillerton? I know that Bailey and Jack are both in Jets VS’s Sharks, is this ever a problem?
bailey was in lying in state - he sang and might of played bass ai cant remember, i saw them once at the shoe and hated it!!! (oh my narrowminded "punk" days!)
i have been since living in portsmouth - the bethlehem abortion clinic / game show host and jets.
being in jets and chillerton is never a problem, through jets we probably got half our shows! but there's a mutual understanding between everyone about booking shows etc.
Q. how would you describe your sound for the people who haven’t heard you? Which
Bands are main Influences to you, and why are you influenced by them?
first off i fucking love gunmoll / small brown bike / propagandhi / leatherface / milwaukees etc all melodc band really (and also darker stuff like isis / keelhaul / oxbow / pelican / scissorfight)
but when writing riffs - if it isnt melodic and the chords dont fit togeather, we dont play it.
greg and bailey both have their own influences, bailey likes NWA and Farside as far as i can tell, and greg likes jesuseater, glass and ashes and turbonegro.
Q. Who writes the lyrics? Your lyrics tend to be about the frustrations of relationships and friendships, are they about specific events personally or are they a collective of ideas?
i write the lyrics, they're my own self indulgent boring hell hole. i woundnt take much notice of the lyrics if i were you, i just moan about time / jobs / girls.
i write most of my lyrics when im traveling on my own, i run to shops and but pens and paper, or manically search for scraps of paper, its quite sad to witness (luckily no one i know has seen me in this state!)
but its not unknown for greg or bailey to contribute, dispite all of us being shallow and narrowminded half the time - we're always interested to hear what each other have to offer for a song (because they're so hard to write! - anythings a bouns!)
Q. Your first release was a split with W.A.E.F, how did that come about? Are they good dudes? Did you play many shows with them before they called it quits? Did they have a last show?
i cant remember if waef had a 'last show', they were a top band. we played loads of shows with em. I loved every one!
the split came about as daz contacted waef about releasing something, it was originally to be with dead memento, but they sucked too much and i think daz saw us play and offered us to do it instead. we had six songs and recorded 5 in a day for the split.
Q. How did the self tiled MCD / 7” go down , did you get much response to it?
well for that release we recorded 7 songs in a day (5 got released on the EP) one is soon to be released on a compilation and the other is a cover of concrete blond feat. alana (who did the lovely singing onthe EP) i dont really take much notice to "response" but what i can tell you i have a few hundred cd's still in my house!!! but i think thats because we had 1000 pressed rather than 500 (waef split). i guess sales have been good, we have some money saved from tour that we're gonna record with sometime.
Q. Am I right in saying you’re currently working on a full length CD with Cat N Cakey, Will it be pressed on some fancy vinyl with bosstunage again? Your Self titled 7” looks amazing, how did you get to work with both Cat n Cakey and Bosstuneage?
yup, as mentioned we're gonna record, rather than keep releasing the odd 5 track here and there, we thought we'd make an effort and do a 9 / 10 track album. we have about 8 songs and 3 half made so far, we're just waiting for blacksmiths studio to relocate so we can record (and write a coupel new tunes!) boss tunage actually asked us if they could release the waef split on a 10"!!!
aston from boss T also booked us a few shows as well - so we're really very greatful to him for that!
as i mentioned daz spoke to us after seeing us play and asked us if we wanted to release something. daz is a fucking top chap too.
Q. What can we be expecting with the Album, did you take a new approach when recording the CD or did you just do what you do?
i think this time we're gonna take the time to record it well, and not just bash the songs out and hope we played it right, ive been thinking about where to use the acoustic and cheeky drum fills or pauses etc. so hopefully we'll have something a bit more 'professional' rather than demo ish.
Q. you recently did a UK tour with circus act, how did you find the tour? Did you play many shows? How was it touring with another CA, any road trip stories?
hahahahaha we toured with circus act and it was great fun, they;re simply the best band, musically and socially. benny boy drove us so it was agreat trip. we played about 10 shows mostly up north.
i'd like to thank everyone who puts us on, it was such an easy tour - the gigs fell into place, the promoters are all good freinds and there was zero hassle.
the stories stay on the road, although dan (guitar) act nearly died but he denies it.
Q. What’s the best show you’ve played so far?
we've only played one show recently, it was matt from tony montana's birthday. me and bailey we a bit late, but we fucking love that gut and his band mates - so it was just a pleasure to be asked to play and hang out with them, i cant really remember the "best" show, they're all good. i guess out of spite is always a highlight, but i get well nervous on a big stage!
Q. You guessed it, what’s the worst show you ever played?
a local one, for a pub that wanted to start putting on new shows, but they had a sound level monitor. we couldnt hear ourselves, greg playing quietly overpowered the monitor and it was shit, my sister had come down to see us, we played shit 4 songs then left. it was awful and very embarassing.
Q. Thoughts on the UK scene at the moment? What keeps you inspired to work your asses off and playing shows?
uk scene is great, without music i wouldnt have many freinds, i'd probably be a geek or a criminal i dunno. but just going to a new town and making freinds with a stranger simply by talking about punk rock etc just makes life easier and gives me more friendly outlook on everything.
we dont really work our asses off, we just do what we want, and sometimes we get asked to play a show!
Q. What does the future hold for Chillerton? Any plans of another tour?
we're definately gonna book another tour with circus act, not sure when. i think if possible you me and the atom bomb are gona come along too! we're gonna get the new CD out hopefully it will co inside with the tour, and pay back the label that invested their hard earned cash into 3 losers!
Q. Anything Else you would like to add?
i think i wasted an hour at work writing this!
cheers wayne, see you around!
