came from the web page of Karen Black's genealogy
Many Thanks to Karen...

Charles1 DWINNELL, born about 1814 in United States; died after 1893. He married on 3 May 1841 in St. James-on-the-Lines, Penetanguishene, Tiny Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada, Eliza Ann HILL, born 14 Aug 1823 in England; died 16 Jun 1902 in Dollartown, Midland, Tay Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada.

Notes for Charles DWINNELL
Charles, who immigrated from the United States to Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada sometime in the early 1840s, is believed to be the direct descendant of Michael Dwinnell, the founder of the family in North America. Michael may have come from Scotland or Ireland, but family tradition says he was a Hueguenot who came from France. He is supposed to have settled in Topsfield, Massachussetts about 1664. "On Oct. 24, 1672, he purchased from Francis Peabody, for seventy pounds, fifty acres of land lying and being in Topsfield...on the south side of the river called Ipwich River...bounded in part by Salem line. He purchased other pieces of land and received common land and many of his descendants had homes in the vicinity. He was made a commoner Mar. 7. 1675/76." (Source: Dow, George Francis. History of Topsfield, Massachussetts. Topsfield Historical Society: Topsfield, MA, 1940, p. 37 and 419)

We visited both Salem and Topsfield in 1997-1998, and found that Michael's property was still occupied by one of his descendants. One of his son's houses is still standing, and the museum known at the "Proctor House" is a fine example of a the kind of seventeenth century home that Michael and his family probably enjoyed.

Michael's land was located five miles from Salem, Massachussetts. He was well-connected in the community and his son Michael was a doctor, so he is sure to have known some of the "witches" who were tried and hung for their imagined crimes.

In his will dated June 29, 1710/1711, he identified all his children and there are several Dwinnell genealogies which have attempted to map their descendants as they spread out across the United States. One of the most comprehensive of these is the Dwinell, Dunnell, Dwinnell, Dwinal Genealogy, which Frank L. Dwinnell had reprinted in 1974. However, none of these genealogies identifies my three times great- grandfather Charles Dwinnell, whom Canadian census records have identfied as being born in the United States about 1814. Gary French of Elmvale, Ontario, who studied the Dwinnells exhaustively in the 1970s, notes that Charles Dwinnell would have been about six generations removed from Michael Dwinnell.

Consequently, Charles and his wife, Eliza Ann Hill, appear to have simply sprung into existence in Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada sometime in the early 1840s.
From the above information, we may assume that Charles arrived in Euphrasia Township during the early 1840s, and had moved into Tiny Township by the early 1850s. Did he remain on Con. 2, Lot 95 after purchasing Con. 6, Lot 12 and selling this land to his son and Hele?

Eliza and Charles were married by Rev. Hallen. Witnesses: John and Ann Hill. Both Eliza and Charles were listed as Flos Twp. residents when they married.

Extract from Eliza's death register: "Eliza Dwindle died 16 June 1902, age 80. She was a widow of a farmer, currently residing in Dollar Town, Tay Township. She was born in England. Cause of death was angina pretonis? Physician: John Wilkinson. Religion: Methodist." (MS 935, Reel #108, Ontario Vital Statistics. Deaths., #024255)

Notes for Eliza Ann HILL In the 1901 Tay Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario Census. (No.1, p.7, line 52), 78 year old Eliza Dwinnill (sic) is living in the household of her daughter Lydia Prentice, 44 (26 Nov 1856) who claims to be Ontario born, but Dutch in origin. Eliza's birthday is provided here as 14 Aug. 1823, and she apparently immigrated from England in 1831. Deaths., #024255) Children of Charles1 DWINNELL and Eliza Ann HILL were as follows: Eliza was born Aug.14, 1823...died June 16, 1902...age 80
...came from England in 1831

My sister Jill also found a note, written by our
mother
Hi! Kids!!!
This bonnet belonged to Aunt Annie Edwards.
She was my grandfather Edwards(Bob Edwards) sister.
She was an old maid.
She had at one time a sweetheart
and one day she was sewing a button on his coat
and found a letter in his pocket from another girl.
She broke up with him and remained single all her life.
At the time of her death I understand
they found letters in the house showing
she had been corresponding with him in the later years.
The big scrapbook was also hers.
I still remember her.
She was quite outspoken and crabby at times.
You can pass on this information to your family.
Mom

and so we have passed it along (thanks Mom)

This is a poem that Mom wrote, not long before she died
I think she would be pleased with this "family" web page

When my life on this earth is all finished
And my life's pathway I've finally trod
I hope I may go to that great beyond
To sit on the right hand of God,
But I hope he just won't leave me idle
With no work for me in his plans
I'm sure I could never just sit there
With nothing, to do with my hands
I hope he will give me some cooking to do
I hope he will ask me to sew
I'd love to have flowers and plants to tend
And seedlings to nurture and grow
And Ah! There just has to be music
Not the kind from some great big band
Just a piano and I all alone
To make music that I understand
I hope there'll be wide open spaces with trees
And water where I can fish
All these things are the closest to heaven I know
There's nothing more I could wish
Oh! Yes, just one more thing I would ask-
If God would grant my request
And assure me, My loved ones are Happy and Safe
and Love one another---Then I will rest
Alice May Ingram
