Chapter 2

Jordan stood on the porch of her house and sighed. Just one week ago she had to bury her best friend, and now here she was, back home with no one to talk to. A light wind whipped across the patio, rustling the few potted plants and Jordan's long, black hair. The door creaked behind her, and she spun around.

"Hey Michelle," she smiled at her sister. Michelle stood next to Jordan with her arms crossed and followed her sister's line of sight.

"What you lookin' at?"

"Huh? Oh, nothing in particular. I was just thinking."

"Caryn?"

Jordan nodded slowly. "Caryn. You know, it's only been a week, but already I miss her more than anything. We were just starting to become great friends again and then......." She sighed deeply and sat down on the porch steps. She pushed the hair out of her face with a shaky hand. "I just don't understand."

"I don't either, but that's just the way things go in this world. What are you going to do about it?"

"Nothing I guess. I just wish I could have said one more thing to her. Or gone out to the store, or taken a drive. Anything Shell, anything at all."

"Why don't you come out with Mike and me. We're going to the club tonight."

"Nah, I don't want to be a third wheel. I'm just going to stay home. I think I need a little more time."

"Okay,I'm not going to persist." Michelle stood up, and headed for the door. She paused just before she went inside. "You know Jordie, you can't sit around here forever. You gotta get back on your feet. Maybe there's a job opening with *NSYNC. I mean, they are going to need a new manager now. But it's just a suggestion."

Jordan turned around to say something to her, but she was already inside.

Jordan looked to where the sun was setting now on the horizon. Beautiful hues of purple, red and orange spread over the sky like fire. A smile slowly spread her face as she remebered the last conversation she had with Caryn

".......I want you guys to meet your new road manager. Jordan will be taking over.......

She lifted herself off of the porch. Jordan had turned down their guys' offers because she felt she could never fill her friend's shoes as manager, but now she felt she owed it to Caryn.

Michelle was right. Jordan needed to do this, and the guys needed a manager.

"I'm gonna do it," she said to herself, "I'm going to Florida. Michelle!"

Jordan ran inside after her sister. She found her in the kitchen having a glass of water by the sink.

"You're absolutely right Shell. I need to do this."

"Do what?"

"I'm going to go to Florida and be the guys' manager. I owe it to myself and Caryn to do this one thing right."

"You've done a lot of things right."

"No I haven't! I'm such a screw up Shell! I'm 22, and I have never been to college. I don't know what I want to do with my life. Now I do. this is what I want to do. I want to be a manager. And with the money, I'm going to college. I have to go pack!"

Jordan ran skiddishly upstairs to her room. Michelle shook her head as she laughed to herself. She dumped the glass of water into the sink, and brushed her hands off.

"That's that," she said. With that, she went to her room.
