That night I spent much of the time parked in front of the TV in the ET room. All the other guys were out clubbing while Lance, Justin, and I watched old movie after old movie. We were right in the middle of having a good time when the phone rang.
“I’ll get it!” Justin yelled, bounding off the couch. Lance and I just shrugged as Grumpier Old Men played on the screen. After a long silence, I heard Lance talk for the first time.
“Hey Caryn, can I ask you something?”
“Sure Lance. What?”
“How old are you?”
“Gonna be eighteen in no time. A few months I believe.”
“I just thought I was gonna be alone out here. I'm not really super social like all the other guys. And I'm also kinda…….shy.”
“Aww, bull! You’re talking to me, right?”
He chuckled, “I guess. Can I say something else?”
“Sure Lance. You know, you don’t have to ask me if you can say something. Just say It.”
“I like you.”
I could feel my cheeks burn as a smile spread across my face.
“I think I like you too, Lance. You wanna go on a date?”
“Wow. I wasn’t expecting that.”
We both shared a laugh as we gathered our thoughts. After another long silence, he spoke.
“Let’s do it. Let’s go to the movies and dinner tomorrow night after the other guys go out.”
I couldn’t believe how happy I felt. I was about to continue the conversation when Justin walked back in. All I could say was “Okay” before Justin began blabbing.
“That was Brittany. She wants me to go to her birthday party tomorrow. What do you think?”
“Go!” Lance and I yelled in unison. “Jinx!” I screamed before he could. We both broke out laughing again. Watching Justin’s confused face made it even worse. This was going to be great!
