Four years, and not a word from J.C. He was doing great on his show. Jordan was becoming my best friend (since we were the same age), and her sisters were drifting more and more away as they matured. We watched the show everyday until I was too old to be watching it. That’s when I began to forget about J.C.
Today is my first day of work. I was so excited. I was finally a sixteen-year-old! I started driving a month ago, and I’m still not very good.
"Caryn! Breakfast! You're going to be late for work! I want you home early! We have a visitor coming later!" Dave's voice filled the halls of our new mansion.
"Yeah, yeah! I'm coming!" I bounded down the stairs. Dave had set the table and there were small plates filled with eggs and bacon. I waved my hand. "Not hungry. I'll eat at work." I grabbed a piece of bread. "Who's this 'visitor' you keep talking about?"
"Oh, you'll see soon enough. Here are the keys. Take the jeep."
I nodded. I threw on my coat and raced out the door. The black jeep sat at the far end of the driveway. I climbed in and threw my things in the back. It would take me about two hours to get there. We lived in the country in Bowie, Maryland. My job was in downtown Washington D.C.
(Pulling out of the driveway was always the hardest thing for me to do. I almost hit someone a while ago, so I always exercise extreme caution when pulling out.)
There was a singer on the radio that sounded exactly like J.C. It was about an hour into my drive when I started thinking about him again. I remembered the way I used to sit under the piano when he played and sang. He had the most beautiful voice even at ten years old! I didn't even notice I went the wrong way until it was too late.
"Oh man! What the hell was I thinking?! Now I’m gonna be totally late! Why don't you just come home Jace?" I raised my hands towards the sky.
I ended up getting to work an hour late. I also ended up spending another hour explaining why.
