Lars' love for rock music started when he was only 10. He attented his first ever concert watching Deep Purple perform. This music was totally different from what Lars was used to because his dad ran a small jazz club. He was so inspired by their music that the next day, he went out and bought their 'Fireball' album. Three years later at the age of 13, he was able to get his grandmother to buy him his first drum kit.

Music and drumming toke a backseat to tennis, his father's profession. He was a junior ranked player in Denmark but when his family moved out to Newport Beach, California, he was considered just another tennis player. Shortly after, Lars' passion for music grew and he concentrated on music more then on tennis. He began to trade tapes here to obtain his beloved blend of European Metal.

Then in 1981, he went out to England to catch some shows of his favorite band, Diamond Head. Some how, he talked the band into letting him stay with them until he had to return to California. Meanwhile, back in America, his tape trading friend, Brian Slagel, was looking for bands to record songs for an album that would be released by Metal Blade Records. Lars secured himself a spot on the album. But there was one problem, Lars had no band.

Before he went to England he jammed a bit with a guy called James Hetfield. The jam had it's share of problems. Lars' time keeping wasn't that great and the cymbols fell victum to gravity alot. But the next time Lars' had bait, a spot on an album. James of course took the bait and Metallica was born.
