Christian Palencia Expos Comp, Per. 4 9/4/03 Personal Statement Even as a young boy I enjoyed engaging hurling my fists at an opposition. My parents tell me that from an early age of 4 I used to beat up my cousins and make them cry. I still vaguely remember my first physical fight in Elementary School. I was in either the 4th or 5th grade at the time. All my vigor towards combat and physical exertion has led me to become who I am. I have matured many knots over the years. About five years from now I was willing to absorb and give out pain for almost any argument. There weren’t many questions asked before I would be lunging my fists at someone. My temper was and still is horrible, just that now I have a lot more self-control. As I got older I started realizing that trying to start fights wasn’t too smart anymore. Everyone nowadays is somehow gang related, or has a crew or group of people that will their friends. Fights often turn lopsided nowadays as teenagers have no pride in one on one combat anymore. It would take a lot more now to get me to fight than ever before. The main actions to get me to fight and be very vulgar would be to lay a hand on me, talk about my family, and disrespect me to my face. There are other things that tick me off to the boiling point as well but I don’t like expressing those feelings and sharing. My love for fighting and physical and mental demands has leaded me in the way of martial arts. I’m not talking about the old martial artists you see on television jumping around doing somersaults. I’m talking about real martial arts that help you in real life situations. I have taken up a passion for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai. I have competed in tournament have done exceptionally well. My last tournament on August 23rd, 2003 I made my opponent lose consciousness with a reverse triangle choke. With all my acquired training I hope to not just compete in straight grappling tournaments, but push myself a step further and compete in full contact fighting, or as martial artists call it, “Mixed Martial Arts.” You might have seen commercials for these types of competitions, there are many organizations around the world, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), Pride, Shooto etc. I see myself competing in these tournaments and becoming a champion. My Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor was the instructor of the ex heavyweight champion of the world in the UFC. When I graduate from High School I plan to continue my education and my training. I will most likely attend Santa Monica College. It is not known yet for me what careeer major I am leaning towards. My mind is open to anything that might just surprise me in the future. Training full time will also be a priority for me. I will keep my self in shape and healthy. With my instructor by my side and my dedication I can become a champion. I just hope I don’t become washed up and be known as the biggest waste of talent, as some fighters are known early in there careers.
