History
Before 2619, Luthien was simply an insignifnicant farmingworld settled in the late 23rd century. However, in that year Sanethia Kurita proclaimed that it would become the capital of the Draconis Combine, bringing heated protest from farmers who simply wanted to be left alone. The farmers were eventually evacuated to the unsettled though habitable world of Yumesta, and Luthien quikly became a world covered with factories, which it remains to this day. Luthien was nearly captured by the Smoke Jaguars during the Clan invasion, but several elite Draconis regiments along with FedCom-backed mercenaries, including the Kell Hounds and Wolf's Dragoons, were able to fend of the Clanners' assault.
Culture/Demographics
Although the majority of people follow
traditional Eastern religions, there is a minority of
Christians and Jews on Luthien. Despite the fact
that Abrahamic religions, with a God and a Messiah,
who are to be more revered than the Coordinator,
have never been a favorite of the Kuritas, Christianity
has been allowed to operate within the Combine,
including its capital Luthien, because of the
predominatly Luthean ex-military district of Rasalhague.
During the time around Christmas, the Christians
decorate Imperial City with such traditional decorations
as reefs and strings of lights.
Despite an even less tolerant attitude
towards Jews throughout the DC's history, small
enclaves of Lubavitchers, decendants of Hasidic
Jews, have lived pretty much unmolested on Luthien.
The Lubavitchers have assisted in Theodore Kurita's
reclaimation efforts of the many poluted areas on
Luthien since the programs' start in the 3040s. They
consider their effort a "mitzvot", or good deed, second
only to the study of the Torah.
Economy
Luthien is an industrial world with many manufacturing facilities, including 'Mech factories. Many of the DC's new OmniMechs are manufatured on this planet.
Geography
Despite containing no raw materials, Luthien is a major manufacturing center. Ugly, sprawling factories, where much of the populace lives, in general states of disrepair contaminate the water with chemicals while slums of brick and wood suround the manufacturing cities. This has earned the planet the nickname "Black Luthien" troughout much of the Inner Sphere. By contrast, Imperial City, capital and home to the Kurita, is considered one of the most breathtaking sites in the Inner Sphere. It's Medival-Japanese-style buildings, constucted of teak and marble, rise majestically, while the sereneDaimyo canal gently flows through the city. The Imperial Palace, constructed solely of teak, is surrounded by verdent parks with grand sequoias and birch trees. Much of Luthien, including the Imperial City, was scared by the viscious fighting with the Clans. However, efforts are under way to repair much of this damage.
